this is not rocketry related but is old and cool

One of my favorite animated videos ( Heavy Metal 1981 ) was on TV early Monday morning

Towards the end of the movie there is a music clip played by Elmer Bernstein about the "Flight to the temple"
by a Tarakian named Taarna . In the music clip there is an instrument that sounds like a flute. I have been wondering what instrument was used to make that cool sound

In the music clip below you can hear it at :22 seconds on the clip

Well I FINALLY found out what it was and was surprised and learned about a cool instrument that I never
heard of before !! The instrument is called a " Ondes Martenot " see clip below and can hear the sound at 3:00
there is a wire that is used by the players thumb !!

You learn something new every day . Why not share some of it ?

Enjoy !!

Enjoy !!

I've seen that movie sooo many times!!! Great soundtrack!

"STEEERRNNN!!!!! I'm gonna cut you up into little biddy pieces and bury you alive!!"

Rumor has it, that the movie was never released to video because the music used in it, was never officially licenced for the film (stolen / used without permission). but it's all been sorted out.

Also, the final cut, one of the 'official reels' of the movie almost got destroyed when it was left of a table, and a can of pineapple juice was accidentally spilt very near it.. almost on it! (production bit done here in Montreal)

The 'Locknar' only appears (officially) in one of the stories derived for the movie: 'Den' by Richard Corben

Lots of cool and unique synthesizers out there. One of the ones that's most interesting to me is the Hammond Novachord, which dates back to 1939! The sounds of it are really interesting, consider it's from WW2 era electronics:

And then there's..... whatever this is:

Lots of cool old synths and mechanical automated players at the Musical Instrument Museum in Scottsdale AZ.

6600 instruments from 200 countries. Takes a couple days to see it all.

Yes, but what about the "Very unusual instrument"? :) I've never done crystal meth, but I imagine that would be what the soundtrack in my head would sound like if I did.

Novachord restoration process is pretty intense- probably more than a yamaha CS80

I've got the CD and samples from that very Novachord. The samples are available from Soniccouture.

Another cute toy.

Very Cool.
I was fortunate to know one of the few persons that repairs Mellotrons,.

I paid him a visit after he acquired this one:

Quite a feeling to know I was sitting in front of the instrument used on "Tuesday Afternoon", "Nights in White Satin" and "In search of the Lost Chord".

I got to take a tour of Moog music in Cheektowaga NY in the early 1980’s when I was in 6th grade. They were building MemoryMoogs that day...

The Tron Doctor, Frank S. I only know him through the Internet, but we've talked on the phone a couple of times. That's his MkII, #134 that he purchased from the estate of another Frank S., author of The Mellotron Book. It was refurbished by another master Mellotron restorer in Vermont, Jerry K., the Mellotron Professor: https://kleonard.com/mellotron/vt0304/pindertron2.htm. Looks like Frank's M4000 to the left. I have 2 of them, but in black.

A Clavioline was used in Telstar.

I tried to simulate the sound in my home studio with a Mini-Korg, a DSI PolyEvolver Keyboard and Mellotron Brass. Not quite there, though. https://soundcloud.com/ernieornowicz/telstar

A Clavioline was used in Telstar.

Yep, and it was used in these too.
Interesting instrument.
I seem to recall Meeks also used a recording of a flushing toilet in Telstar...I think you had the scoop on that documentray video on the Joe Meeks story.

I just watched Heavy Metal not that long ago, one of my favorites from way back. I still have a copy on VHS.

A good read is "Joe Meek's Bold Techniques" by Barry Cleveland.

The Clavioline was made to attach under the keyboard of a piano. I have a friend who has one. Very cool, primitive instrument.

Reading the description of the movie ( Heavy Metal 1981 ) on Wikipedia, its hard to believe this music would be included.
