Never seemed to me like the Jan-1 new year meant much in China. I was in Shanghai for Chinese New Year in 2006, and the amount of fireworks was really impressive. People would basically throw a pre-rigged box into the middle of a street and light it up, and for the next several minutes there would be constant fireworks, until you couldn't see anything for all of the smoke. I got a few pictures from my hotel of multiple boxes going off at the same time, though 12 years ago my camera wasn't so hot.
