Just throwing this out there, early stages of mindsim...did some CG/mass balancing sims and some CP calcs....here are the paper templates, 12" ruler for scale, around 29" long, 23.5" wingspan....

This will be the top view, will probably have a partial doubler on the wing bottom for stiffness, and double/tripled wingtip engine pods. Core will be a 24mm heavy motor tube, and full length coupler inside it.....vertical stab..so will be a simplified structure, with flat wing and the straight down motor pods, so from top or below will really have the look, which is mostly what you see when it is flying, what do you think?

I need to keep the bottom tube exposed so I can mount rail buttons/skids so I can't really do a bulbous nose because it sticks down and I don't want to do rail buttons through the wings.


I'll have a double stacked center thingy on the wing to simulate whatever the heck that part was, and two angled plates to simulate the angled plate thingies...

Photos now working...the little motor mount tube is there just to show how the stuffer tube will go into the bridge... So the stuffer tube will go almost to the end of the bridge, I'll use the hollow bridge for any nose weight.

I'll have skids on the bottom front of the stuffer tube to take the landing...

First picture you can see the the wing doublers which will go on the bottom of the wing forward edge to stiffen it, the engine pods which will be 3 ply, the center top fuse stack which is 3 ply, with a slot for the vertical fin(decided single fin looked better and was simpler, the angled plates for the top block, the neck top piece and the forward bridge.

Second photo shows the same but with the main wing. Entire foam component is 3.25 oz right now. With tube, carbon spar, rx and servos probably right around 6-7 oz which is on par for a 10-11 oz flying weight, we'll see. This might be a plans only assuming it works, lots of pieces to cut.

Ok, back from Seattle, got a chance to laminate the upper deck, engine pods and do some sanding, apply the wing doubler and attach one motor pod. The masking is for the 3m-77 spray contact cement I used for the wing doublers and laminating the pieces.

Ok, got the tubing today, and did glide tests. I wound up adding some plates on either side of the fuse at the bottom rear to help keep the middle of the wing from sagging on landing, there was a bit too much flex in the spar for my taste when it was sitting on just the motor pods. When all was said and done, putting the receiver/battery all the way up front was too nose heavy so I wound up putting the rx and battery underneath the wing velcro'd/tucked against the fuse side. This got rid of the weight of the servo extensions which cut 1/2 ounce and I only needed a half an ounce of nose weight to be at 10.25 oz rtf right now. Hopefully it will fly and glide fine. I've left the bottom of the bridge section taped for now till I determine nose weight, when it is good I'll glue it in place before painting.

Thanks Guys, It's got the feel of the Battlecruiser at least, even if doesn't have all the wing bends and little details, it was a tradeoff of look versus drag and strength and potential of making it fit into a kit box if needed. Hopefully will get a chance to fly it today at lunchtime.

Really impressive. Saw the pic of it on the NAR FB site and was immediately intrigued--immediate recognition, it's got enough of the shape and important details where it counts.
 
Dang. Bypassed this thread till now. Sorry I did! That is beyond cool. Wish I could see it fly (I mean besides on video). Still, looking forward to video.
 
Flew this afternoon before lunch. Cold but dead calm. Took two flights to get the boost trim right, needed just a bit of downtrim, I put in too much for the second flight. However glide trim and CG were dead on, you would not believe how much this thing just floats, being basically a flying wing that is running nose heavy, it does run out of flare for nose up landing, it just lands horizontally, but the decent rate and speed is so slow it is not an issue at all. I'm pretty stoked.
 
I covered the vertical stab black to make it less intrusive, now just need to wait for warmer weather to paint it gray.

Dick, yes, I've seen that before in one or two of my lifting body books, a great example of early RC.

I added a little bridge detail, hopefully it won't cause any weird drag impact on boost/glide...

Your flight comments sound familiar. My RC D7 also tends to simply "fall" if you stall. It also has receiver & battery in the leading edge of the 'wing'.

I'll try to get a video today. Got some painting weather this morning, did some little details, will probably do some little klingon symbols on the wings later, btw paint added 1/2 ounce and 3 grams nose weigh to re-balance, so 10.75 oz now rtf.

Here are two flights today, first flight needed a bit of re trim adjustment for boost to account for the extra bridge detail/drag, it kept pushing over, so I just pulled up every so often, second flight was pretty hands off for boost. Glide trim on the first flight was a little too much up, it was mushing a bit then dropping the nose, the second flight was about perfect.

We don't get a lot of (maybe no) RC/RG flights at MDRA, so this is so cool to me. I am very impressed. Thanks for sharing!
