The teacher in question had several 4xAA powered Solar launch controllers. He did not have the "Astron" system that used a car battery, which is required to use bare nichrome. Hence the switch to fuse.

I can't speak for all of Europe, but at least in some of the countries in Europe the most common LPR motors come with fuses. Composite motors and flights on organized launches are generally ignited electrically, as far as I can tell.

EWverybody has thier own way of business. In Canada ignition is done electrically because it is felt to be safer that way. On the other hand I like my neighbour and dont wander into his house telling him what to do How does UKRA view the fuse thing I wonder.

Been doing rocketry in the UK for over 10 years.
never seen any one use a fuse.
and i'm pretty damn sure fuses are against the UKRA safety code.

Along time ago in the 70's, Jetex motors used fuses and the instruction used to tell you to light them with a lit cigarette.

As I mentioned earlier, back in Grand Rapids we used Jetex fuse as backup when the batteries in my Electro-Launch were too depleted. And 45 years ago, cig smoking was pretty ubiquitous. A lit cigarette could serve the same function in this case as a burning piece of punk, I suppose. Except that the stand-off distance was even less, because it usually wasn't placed on the end of a long stick. Neither of us two middle schoolers smoked, so we just used stick matches to light the fuse. I wasn't too happy with this method, but it did work on the few occasions when we used it. Both the friend who brought the fuse and I much preferred to use electrical ignition, and fuse was never our first, second or even third option. These days, there's precious little excuse anymore for using fuse.

    I used a fuse.

I used a fuse to ignight my motors until the early 90's. I never had a mishap, a friend did by lighting a hay field on fire, but he wasn't too bright! I went over to electric because the LHS stop selling the fuse material. They said it was too dangerous.
Imanine that, after selling me fuse material for twenty years, it was too dangerous!
