My generation learned from a young age that all men, and all strangers, but especially strange men by themselves, are scary and to be avoided. Our parents' generation did us a grave disservice with that one. "Don't talk to strangers!" I'm pretty sure it came out of one of those child abduction panics, and took on a life of it's own.
Also, we subconsciously see other people avoid someone, and mimic that behavior, or assume they see something to avoid that we don't. Or we fear we'll be shunned too if we associate with them...
I'm not a shrink, but I observe and think about stuff a lot more that I probably should. It's probably because I get avoided a lot...
This coming from the man who drives a van with a sign that says "free candy"
