wow! some seem awfully steep! But I guess that's what eh fair market price is..

(Thrustlineaero was a bit of a surprise!)

Rockets are a niche market but they might sell. I have sold one domain at a high price.

Chuck, you have done this before? I have a question I will take offline, I will send you a PM.

I purchase domains when the website is no more. I try to email the owner and buy it before the site shutsdown. If they fail to respond, I buy it.

Domains are a tricky ethical situation. We're well past the first stampede, so those issues I'll not address. But at first blush, if someone lets one lapse, it's safe to assume they didn't want it, making it legit to buy it and use it, or, sell it for the traffic value.

The ethical tick is, if someone's interested and someone else holds it over their head in some manner. examples being things like a local sporting goods company is called "Dick's sporting goods" Well, the owner of www.dicks.com put... well take a guess....on the page and made some pretty crazy demands on price. Or lets say someone is working on a project and not really jumping on domains during it, and someone else buys them all up and basically demands blackmail prices to get them.

Sure it's legal.... but legal doesn't make it right.

I agree. The domain I sold make me a little cash. I would have let is go for much less money but they made me an offer. I took it and then they failed to build on the domain. It lapsed and once again, I own it. I look for neat sites to buy if they lapse, btu my ethics require that at least warn them of a pending lapse.

I moved this thread off of the orginal thread because we were taking over a vendors thread.

A good way to deal with it. I think there are some really big grey areas here. If something has value and someone lets it go for whatever reason, lets say a common misspelling or something like www.coolgenericname.com, well game on and it has a tangible value to anyone who owns it. It's things like "www.specificname.com" that only have value to one company, and wind up getting redirected to a competition site or worse that I see as a blackmail/unethical situation.

I am reminded of a great SNL sketch from probably over a decade ago about a bank which got into online services a bit late. I think TRF rules prohibit me from using any of the language I'd have to use to describe the sketch, but it's so funny I still have trouble breathing if I see it today. If you know the sketch I'm talking about, you know why it's so funny, and why I can't name it here.

I'm lazy with renewing, so I set up autorenew for domains. I currently only own one, and haven't done anything with it yet, but I know I'm lazy and slow to build things, hence the autorenew.

OMG THIS HAUNTS ME TO THI! I work in pathology, and in the early 00's, I was going camping with my girlfriend (now wife, proposed on that trip!). Knowing that she's got a little bit of a Prima donna streak in her, I decided to go online and look up the cost for an air mattress that would fit in my tent. "Dick's is nearby!" said I, as I logged into a computer that is IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAB with a monitor at eye-level when you're standing, clearly visible from all corners of the large space with 10 colleagues doing various tasks. dicks.com is what I typed, and this was back when pop-ups were new and EVERYWHERE. OMG, I wanted to die. Thousands of windows spawned, flashing and swirling, drawing the eye of absolutely everyone in the space. I'm frantically trying to closecloseclose, but ended up just turning off the monitor red-faced and mortified.

Can you give some clues? Sounds like something I don't want to miss!

A friend & I had a personal hobby site back in the early 2000's. It had 'some' traffic. We went our separate ways after a few years of the site running. it was immediately snapped up. It was ran as something else, but the same domain name & all. It seems to be free / available today. But $2100 seems a bit steep to get it back.. (I don't need it back that badly!!)

Never been to that website, but I can guess what you found. You have to admit, dicks.com is probably a very appropriate name for the website.

I am very honest in my approach. I charge what it cost me if someone wants it back. I bought a domain a few year ago after expiration. I warned the guy it was expiring nearly 2 weeks before expiration. He did nto respond.

I had to wait nearly 60 days after for it to come up for sale. I bought it for $75 including all the fees but except the $8 per year fee. I renewed it for 5 years or $40. I asked for $115 plus the $10 transfer fee. The guy want to haggle down to $90. I refused. I still have the domain.

Domains are expensive if they are pre-owned and have traffic being delivered. What i was will say is that often this traffic is low quality and often does not deliver sales. This is especially true of the traffic is sent to the new site that has nothing to do with the previous site ---- i.e. Porn or a doorway of links.

Actually, the name of the sketch is Dillon/Edwards Investments. Google "SNL Dillon Edwards" and it's the first thing that pops up.

You're welcome.
