Cosmodrome on Netflix

I hadn't noticed this on Netflix before, and haven't seen it mentioned here, so maybe it's new*. 'Cosmodrome' is a documentary concerning the development of Russian rocket engines, and how they came to be used in American launch vehicles. Well done and very interesting. Some good views of the N1 program. Recommended.

*edit - new to Netflix that is. It's a 2008 documentary.

This was a good documentary on the closed cycle type of rocket engine attempted on the Soviet N-1 but eventually cancelled, but how the remaining warehoused engines found their way into American space program and eventually into the uprated Atlas launch vehicles. Bought it on VHS years ago....might be on DVD.

+1 good documentary, but they did do a lot of America bashing.

Yeah, their references to the Apollo program were snide and derogatory, as if it was a chronically disaster-plagued $#$#-show that somehow managed to land men on the moon by sheer accident.

Also a lot of snotty references to the "luxurious" NASA program which allegedly had all the money it wanted to spend while the Soviet program supposedly had to be lean, mean and economical.

In real life of course NASA appropriations had to fight their way through Congress for approval (and there was indeed significant political agitation for cuts in NASA funding in the 1960s) whereas in the USSR space expenditures were part of the military budget, and in the USSR if you didn't like the money being spent on the military budget you got a quick one-way ticket to the Gulag.
