North Coast Rocketry Releases the North Hawk TM Flying Model Rocket Kit!

North Coast Rocketry is proud to release the North Hawk TM, a radio control boost glider kit, designed to fly on B and C engines.

The NCR North Hawk takes advantage of revolution in micro radio control gear to bring affordable RC flying to model rocketry! The North Hawk, designed by Bob Ferrante, features straight up, hands-off boosts due to it’s long pop-pod. It then easily transitions to glide, while the pod returns to earth via streamer.

The North Hawk was designed with the novice RC flyer in mind. The kit takes advantage of the laser cutting process to make part alignment straightforward and assembly quick and easy.

The glider has a 24” wingspan, is 22” long, and weighs about 2.4 oz with the radio gear.

The kit features laser-cut balsa parts, 3D printed pop-pod hooks, and a colorful decal. This kit requires a Spektrum AS6410L DSMX-6-Ch Ultra Micro AS3X Receiver; compatible transmitter; and 70 mAh 1S 14C LiPo battery.

Looks awesome! With the demise of Edmonds, this is what I've been looking for....almost. Since I am a novice, I would love to buy a complete kit that includes all electronics. I don't currently know enough to know about what transmitter I should buy.

If you want to try this model, the folks here in this forum can steer you towards the right radio gear.
It is not really feasible for a small company to offer a model like this with the radio gear included.

Luckily, the suggested gear is very common and easy to obtain. In fact, someone on a budget can find super deals on the small Horizon uM and uMX rc models that use the suggested radio gear. I have picked used models up for as little as 20-25 bucks, including the very basic transmitter that comes with the RTF versions.

Some of the Spektrum micro radio bricks even include a gyro system called AS3X that works well to edit out wind gust effects from the model. The micro brick with the AS3X gyro system in the uMx Micro Radian is designed to work well in a small glider with rudder and elevator controls like the NCR NorthHawk.

So: if you really want to do it, we will help you get into it.

Here's the transmitter I'm using for my North Hawk, as well as the "brick" containing the receiver and servos you'll need.

With this gear in hand the only RC hardware voodoo lacking would be a flight battery, as well as a way to charge it.

Another way to get the receiver brick, battery, and charger you need would be to purchase a UMX Radian motor glider. Fly the glider until you feel comfortable on the sticks, then keep flying it until you break it. Move the receiver brick from the Radian carcass to your new North Hawk, and you're all set!

If you wish to take a more budget-friendly approach to the transmitter, search eBay for a Spektrum DX5E radio. You should be able to grab a perfectly suitable one for $30-50.

Hello,

Does anyone know the correct dihedral for the glider?

The gauge - placed at the onboard side of the outer panel so the bottom of the wing is flush with the top of the gauge - results in a wingtip 2 3/8” from the table. This seems high to me.
