Ordered three more Cosmic Interceptors, one for me and two for kits....what could I be working on....:) Missile with a man in it?

Sounds like the "Century" series: F-101, F-105, F-106,........and F-104?

Nose on the F-100 might be difficult.

Here is the progress on the starfighter. I wasn't sure I could make something with a large enough wing and not look goofy with the skinny fuse/cockpit, but I think it worked out ok. The wing and tail surfaces are to scale of each other, the fuse is obviously too skinny. I moved the relative wing placement back about an inch to avoid having to add any nose weight. Current test weight is 10 7/8 oz rtf, so painted should be about 11.5 Should have a wing loading similar to my bomarc, or slightly better so won't float. I went with a simple single ply tail with servo mounted under the horiz stab to run the elevator, instead of trying to get fancy routing a flex pushrod inside the tail.
I trimmed the rear end gracefully so I could inset the motor deeper to help cg and also mimick the slight taper of the rear from the side view a bit. Worked out ok. Also created some plates to mimick the engine intakes.

Here is the rest of the assembly. Thinking about leaving the bottom white to save weight and do the top half gray a-la german navy version....

Any German paint scheme on an F-104 and the historical chances of a crash suddenly increase!:) Hang a TLP Kormoran under it and no sea skimming Ekranoplan in the immediate area will be safe!:) You will have to fly it like The Blond Knight!

Well, no German marking but it flew fine. It was 94 out and 13mph winds, handled it great. First two flights needed some downtrim, as expected since I mounted the motor low in the tube to clear the T tail mounting tab. It also needed a bit of elevator throw reduction and 1/4 ounce of nose weight, to tone down how responsive it was, but glide was spot on and quite good, now I can paint it.

Here she is all finished, 11.5 ounces ready to fly. Hand cut vinyl details. For the letters I used some half inch letters I had from office depot, stuck them onto some white vinyl then cut out by hand with a little border, did the same for the crosses, went pretty quickly actually.

While thinking about german starfighters, I got this from Bob Parks, I never knew they did a zell for starfighters, along with a mobile catapult system...

I changed the thread title to how many models you can make from the cosmic interceptor, here I wanted to summarize all of the models I've been able to make from the Cosmic Interceptor kit just for fun:)

F-104, F-105, Delta Dart, Valkyrie, F-101 Voodoo, Interceptor, Pegasus, Avro Arrow, Iron Hand(F-4 based), A-12/SR-71

And to think the Euros wanted to develop their own rocket plane! Just look at what incredible stuff the US sold them instead! You would go out and buy an awesome Cadillac and the dealer would throw in one of those silly little three wheeled Messerschmitt KR200 cars for free! Silly Germans, we will help them out if they stay on our side and buy our second rate stuff. We have the awesome Caddy's, they have silly little BMW Isettas! The US knows best!

You say what? How much is that Messerschmitt worth today versus the Caddy? We actually bought the Harrier? The US and British auto industries are now mere stepchildren to whom? Where are the good old days?

Bob, yes, the bomarc is the only one heavy enough to work with the E-12/E-15...The others are lighter and there is no benefit in using the E-15 as opposed to the E-6, and they are more expensive, you won't get as high an altitude and you risk flutter with the lighter models, they were designed for a moderate boost speed.

Frank

That's a terrific looking fleet!

Is your Bomarc the only model that you recommend that can use the Aerotech single-use E15?

Frank, you are a building machine. Looking forward to seeing these fly in person.

Alas no, it's the same weekend as the Sheridan, OR launch, but I'm going to miss both because I'll be in Reno for the air races, it will be my 20th year going to see that....meet up with friends, etc, wish it was not on the same weekend.

Frank

QUOTE=rharshberger;1613889]I'm looking forward to seeing both yours and Frank's latest creations fly, hopefully you guys are coming to our two day Sept launch.[/QUOTE]

I am! Got the days off AND permission from the wife. The former being the easy part. Looking forward to it.

Beautiful work my friend ! I'm not sure how I missed this thread. They are all outstanding. The Interceptor cone really lends itself to some creativity . I still have a couple laying around. I'm just trying to come up with something --hmmmm- different than what I've done. The 105 is cool. I've toyed with the idea of doing a semi scale like the 104 but I need to get the JQ done first--H

Thank you very much! I think Tom B is going to do a cosmic interceptor based JQ as well.

Here is some video from this morning, really a nice flyer.

.........................

I am making parts for the Quest DragonFly, but I decided to not use the Interceptor nose cone. I went with a 20" wingspan and a BT-70 instead of the 2" PSII tubing. It just looked a little too skinny with the 2" parts. I have a decent firm balsa BT-70 nose cone that I am going to take some left and right vac formed parts off of for a nose and a tail cone. Still not the perfect JQ Dragonfly shape, but close enough.

Crap, I went to order more cosmic interceptor kits and it only let me order six, and says now out of stock....I think I broke it....wonder if they have more somewhere......if Not I'll have to make kits using the standard psII round nose cone and add a paper canopy...

Tri-Ceptor, X-15-3 Delta, set of 3 versions of Interceptors, cranked delta wing, Wing controls only and Full flying Tail version, Concorde, Arc-Light....

Impressive fleet!

I've been selling them locally, if you are interested I do have more:) I've just been asking for $1/kit plus whatever shipping costs, you get a 24" nylon chute, decals, four sheets of cut balsa, some fiber parts, launch lugs, and elastic:)

Frank

What are you doing with all the leftover fins and decals from all those kits?

I salvaged the parts from my first version of the Voodoo, including the nose cone and was thinking maybe a sort of F-14 tom-cat-ish might be interesting, with the wings swept or partially swept....I've done the calculations before for the wing sweep mechanism weight and servo and I don't think it's ever a win for boost performance versus glide, it would be cool might just keep it simple.... Basically a modified delta wing, could do trailing edge controls or full flying tail as the real thing, I usually have to run a bunch of movement for the full flying controls compared to trailing edge surfaces so I'm sure they are more draggy...
I know Tom has one of the original prototype F-14's from hobbylab days he'll eventually restore.....I see he used trailing edge elevons and not full flying surfaces.

Here she is, maidened. Once I get the paint applied it will really look like the wings are swept. It's a little piggy at 13.5oz without paint, flew ok on the E-6's, glide was very nice, very easy flare, just not too high a boost, rolled really nicely..., might be an E-12 or E-15 plane...we'll see.

Spent a lot of time this morning on panel lines, and masking but I think it turned out ok. I used a sundowner scheme but I modified it to have an early 1970's white control surface scheme as I felt it helped set off the swing wing and tail a bit better. 14 oz rtf now with the paint and markings. I think it was the best I could do still using the interceptor nose cone, if I used a standard PSII 2" cone and put a bubble canopy it would probably look more realistic but be slightly heavier.

The Inter-F-14-Ceptor looks great!

I think I read somewhere that Frank is on vacation this week...so, no new Interceptor based fighter this week...:)
