Not a hang fire, the motors fire in a specific sequence to control acceleration. In the shot during setup the pole by the track is part of the firing system. Typically fired by position on the track not time.
Not sure about this one but a lot of HVARs are used to push sleds. Finest of 1950's technology.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. Shoulda guessed.

Aren't HVARs what Mythbusters used in their tests? If so I'd say these aren't HVARs as they seem to have more smoke and flame
