I am looking for the proper English (preferably both AmE and BrE if there's a difference) word/expression for this tool:

It's basically a caliper gauge that you can mount to e. g. a machine and read out the position either directly from the LCD or via a USB connector.

Wixey is a brand of this tool. Grizzly Tools sells them.

or Digital Scale

I have one on my Mill, z-axis, very handy.
