For the Superb Owl, I mean Super Bowl, I have had a hard time picking the team I’d like to see win. In the past I’d go with the Broncos, and this season’s Cinderella story of Peyton Manning making such a huge comeback to win one more time (he may retire, like John Elway did).

But I’m going with the Carolina Panthers. Two reasons. One, I was born in North Carolina. So, there’s that. And also, it would be fantastic to see Cam Newton lead the team to a Super Bowl win. I know, to some Alabama fans, this would be heresy. Yes, under Cam’s leadership, Auburn beat Alabama in the 2010 “Iron Bowl”, likely costing Alabama the 2010 NCAA football championship. But wit Alabama out of the running, I rooted for Auburn to go on and win the championship, which they did. And when Alabama won the NCAA championship in 2011, that made history as the only time that the NCAA football championship has been held by schools in the same state of 4 years in a row (2008 - 2011).

So, I’ll root for the Panthers. But if Denver wins, that’ll be OK too. I’m not putting any bets on anything.

Just hope it’s a good game, blowouts suck unless you have bets on them in your favor. And if Carolina is down 24-0 at the half…. uh, don’t tune out. Auburn was down 24-0 to Alabama in 2010….then Cam caught lightning in a bottle and Auburn won 28-27.

I believe I read in the News Feed here there is going to be a 32 mile radius 'no fly zone', and deadly force may be used.... See the list in the next post.

Edit... Uh-oh, I don't wanna cause a ruckus, some y'all can get crabby around here. :p

Though I'm not a huge football fan, I am a bit bummed the Packers didn't make it...

.

Well, I guess this will probably ruin this super bowl thread, but it's not just "drones". It includes other things too, like model rockets. OK, are people running around with their hair on fire yet? But then also NOT allowed within 32 miles are activities such as flight training, aerobatic flight, glider opeations (meaning manned sailplanes), seaplanes, parachutists, Hang Gliders, Ultralights, Balloons, Crop Dusting, Banner Towing, and so forth.

During the hours of 2 PM to Midnight Sunday.

And actually, it sounds reasonable. What would have been nuts would have been to not allow drones or other models within 32 miles but then indeed allow full sized planes such as listed above doing non-essential flights within 32 miles (OK, 32 miles seems a bit big, but the basic premise is reasonable) . Now, they did not shut down all general aviation, there is a smaller 10 mile radius that does allow some limited forms of aviation, and then a very restricted limit of who/what can fly inside of 10 miles such as security aircraft and medical helicopters.

Two years ago when the Super Bowl was at the first outdoor stadium in many years, I was concerned that something might happen with a drone being flown inside the stadium. Not so much as an idiot doing so as a dumb stunt, but the possible terrorist potential. I figured Homeland Security had some sort of plans in place but it's the sort of thing that would tend to be classified. Various possible technologies to try to detect a drone flying towards the stadium, and various potential ways to disable them. So I was relieved that nothing happened. Now, there are many more people flying drones. And I am one of them, albeit without onboard FPV yet. But I have used a programmable flight controller with GPS in one of my multicopters which could make it fly to a specific GPS coordinate all by itself, get to a desired final altitude (or land) at the designated GPS endpoint, and then activate something, let's say signal a relay to turn on a light bulb. That programmable GPS flight plan technology has existed for a number of years, but only more recently has it become a non-expert easily-programmed feature in some of the higher-end mass market RTF drones.

Whatever methods there may be for detecting drones, and resources for neutralizing them, it would be so much harder if there were say a dozen "innocent" drones being flown a few miles from the stadium, and a terrorist's 13th drone also flying at the same time. Thirteen drones would be a lot to try to deal with, for detection and countering them. So, better for there not be any allowed for a few hours, so that the only ones in the airspace illegally will be dealt with as a threat.

Now I know of course that the no fly one would not cause a terrorist to not fly a drone because it's against the law for those hours. But their task would be harder because they know anything they fly will be assumed to be a threat and that whatever resources are available will be concentrated on trying to take it out, rather than being spread thin trying to also take out non-terrorist drones that ought not to be flying.

Here's an article that lists some of the ways that drones can be "shot down":
https://arstechnica.com/business/20...theres-a-lot-of-new-ways-to-take-down-drones/

Same should apply for someone flying in a Cessna, if they fly towards the stadium they are going to be assumed hostile and are supposed to get shot down before they can reach it.

As for the FAA No Fly Zone, more info at this link which defines what aircraft operations are allowed - within 10 miles, between 10 and 32 miles, and 32 miles: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_6_6446.html

Below is an excerpt for the 32 mile radius limit

C. THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED WITHIN THIS TFR: UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS (UAS), MODEL AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS, MODEL ROCKETRY, FLIGHT TRAINING, PRACTICE INSTRUMENT APPROACHES, AEROBATIC FLIGHT, GLIDER OPERATIONS, SEAPLANE OPERATIONS, PARACHUTE OPERATIONS, ULTRALIGHT, HANG GLIDING, BALLOON OPERATIONS, AGRICULTURE/CROP DUSTING, ANIMAL POPULATION CONTROL FLIGHT OPERATIONS, BANNER TOWING OPERATIONS, SIGHTSEEING OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHTS, AND UTILITY AND PIPELINE SURVEY OPERATIONS.

Oh, and THIS, because this thread is SUPPOSED to be about the Super Bowl Football game:

Mods, if some use this thread for anti-gubmint or anti FAA rants, and you are not up to deleting the posts that break the TRF rules with such political posts, then please just delete the whole thread if people would rather do that than discuss the game.

BTW - I'm not referring to McKailas Dad, but some of the usual suspects.

I too am torn. Big Auburn fan here, but born a Hoosier and watched Peyton Manning many a Sunday. Like George, I'm rooting for the Panthers, but would be fine if it went the other way.

My team, Dallas, has long been absent from the running. So we're going with backup team #1 today, Denver. If Peyton Manning wins, he ties his brotherr for the same number of Super Bowls won. Hey! Same as with my brother!

Go Broncos, don't like the Panthers, one Panther brought a bat on the field during pre game warmups to intimidate an opposing player.

I would like to time tunnel todays athletes back to my time 60s-70s. Jose Batista would need surgery to get a baseball removed from his ear. Panther CB Newman would need staples to close the wound created by getting his lower leg raked by 3/4" metal tipped cleats. It seems to me that todays players need tampons as part of their equipment.

As an anti government rebel :eyepop: I flew my Nano QX (4"x4" quad) in my back yard during the Super Bowl here in Dallas. I flew it in my front yard which was in the no fly zone:lol:

Since they're NOT discussing politics, there's nothing political here.

Just made the salsa. Guac will have to wait until just before the game. It's just me and the cat this year (I have no idea who he's cheering for), so I didn't go all out with brisket/ribs/sausage/etc. Anyone got good snacks?

He has to be cheering for the Panthers, gota be pulling for his relatives:wink:

Congrats to the Denver Broncos (especially the defense) and Peyton Manning for finishing in style.

Yep, credit where credit is due, they deserved it. Whether or not Manning retires on top like Elway, or stays for yet one more rodeo, that's an epic personal comeback for what he's overcome.

And it was a pretty close game till the end.

We'll see the Broncos celebrate at the White House soon.

Denver native here and life-long Broncos fan (but I wouldn't consider myself fanatical). Seen the Broncos lose more Superbowls than win (they're 3-5 if you haven't been counting)..... and all the losses were pretty much 'blow-outs'. Really thought this one was Carolina's to win, and had a bad feeling leading up to the game that it would get out of hand in the Panthers favor. Knew the Broncos defense was good, but their last two games have been incredible on that side of the ball. Shocked they were able to pressure and sack Cam as many times as they did. If you were a fan of defense it was a fun game to watch. Not sure I would have considered it a great game if I didn't have a dog in the fight.

Nothing POLITICAL to see here...

Huh George?

Nothing POLITICAL to see here...

Huh George?

Funny, you said nothing about Macklin's post of presidential candidates from a POLITICAL debate, using the alleged excuse it was about football.

Indeed you rated this thread "5 stars" right below his post from a presidential political debate.

So I posted some on-topic "non-political" items as well.

But thanks for showing your true color, Kiddo.

Nice try...

To my knowledge, Macklin doesn't run crying...

To the moderators or post copies of...

"Da Rulz" everytime someone walks on...

Or crosses over the line...

But you already knew that...

Hipocrisy much?

Kiddo, according to Macklin, it's not "political".

GO WHINE TO HIM.

Hipocrisy much?

Unable to spell much?

And, uh, yeah, the fact you had no problem with Macklin's post from a political debate, definitely much hypocrisy on your part.

But you already knew that.....

The winds died down and the sun shone bright in the clear sky just before the club launch at CRASH yesterday, so it was a good omen in Denver. With the calm weather and clear skies we had a lot of good stuff in the air, from D boost gliders to H410 powered speed demons. Put them up to 4K feet, watched the entire flight in the clear sky and recovered with a short walk. Light clouds rolled in after three so we all got back in plenty of time for the big game. A good day in the Mile High city.
