Hi, I drew up this concept picture for a spinning rocket I had the idea to build. Has anyone built a rocket like this or is there video of something like it. The idea is the center pole is a hollow tube that could go onto a launching poll, the rocket motors would fire off horizontally causing the rocket to spin and take flight like a helicopter.

I just noticed the blades furthest from us in this picture are drawing the wrong way, but you get the idea.

Pretty wild.
Those of you that frequented Red Glare over the years have seen these............

Those are both very cool. That monocopter is like a rocket powered guillotine, insanely cool. Looks like my idea has hope I'll try it out. I have no clue how big to make the fins, what's the right angle or what size of motors to use, I guess it will be good ol trial and error.

I haven't seen a double-decker version like that, but take a look at Scroton for a single deck version:

Under "Ignition", the bit about only needing a short launch rod is true. The rocket wasn't mine but the launch pad for the first launch was, with a normal 3' rod at the time. The rocket bound on the rod and tried to take the pad with it, which wasn't going to end well because the pad was pegged to the ground. It broke the pad and then took the rod with it. I managed to repair the pad; meanwhile the rocket's owner found another pad with a short rod and got a perfectly successful launch from it.

Beware of overpowering the model. Scroton was upgraded to a cluster of 3xC6 on each tip, which was too much for it and it flew off in three directions at once.

What an awesome spinning rocket in that link, I wonder if my double decker idea is over complicating it. I think I'll be a very small version first running on one of the smaller low powered motors for testing.

A model rocket turbine saucer by Boris Katan with a peak rotation rate of 2,000 rpm.

A larger high power turbine saucer by Boris Katan with peak rotation rate of 1,000 rpm.

In each case you need lift motors to give the rocket initial vertical velocity, however the multiple horizontal spin motors rotate the saucer until the turbine blade provide substantial lift. The saucer will hover for a second or so and then begin a controlled low speed descent.
