Adrian Butler is a fellow rocketeer, friend and active TRF'r in need. He was injured a few weeks ago when a cardboard odd-roc failed to leave the rail properly. The launch was run with ALL safety distances in place and there were no carless acts leading up to the accident. Adrian was struck in the leg and required medical attention. Adrian has had to withdraw his participation in the upcoming Midwest Power and more importantly, he has been out of work. This (im sure) is causing a financial stress that is weighing heavy on him. Lets all unite as a community and lend a hand to someone in need. This is a go-fund me page set up by me in Adrians behalf. Truth be told, I was contacted by Mr. Tim Wildman) Lear and he thought this would be a good idea.

Please help out if you can, Adrian is someone who has always been there to help and he deservers a little pay back.

Thanks guys!!

Adrian is a great guy, always looking to help out others and pitch in where there is a need.

(BTW, don't see a link.)

Adrian is one of those rare people that not only can take a joke but occasionally let one right back at ya. He also wears Bong Marsh water better than anyone else I know. You can bet I bummed to see him hurting right now.

Golly guys,
This is soooo nice of you all. Words cannot express what this means to me. And yes I will be at MWP, just not doing anything strenuous. Mostly sitting around with my leg elevated above my heart. I think I can RSO & LCO that way... I promise I'll wear a shoe.... Maybe a shin guard for the good leg. :duck: :duck:

Adrian I'm knocked out,,
I'm so sorry you got hurt..
Get better and feel better quick..
Just think,, your going to get a good laugh at this some day,,, lol... ( I hope )...

Are you filing an insurance claim? If the safety code was followed, then isn't this what NAR and TRA insurance is for?

I will let Adrian answer the details of this if he chooses to do so. However, I am not under the assumption that any of these policies will be covering 100% of the costs here. This fund raiser is more about helping out a buddy and less about the fine print of an insurance policy.

The safety code was followed , so far Adrian's personal health insurance has picked up the bill and NAR has said they will cover the rest, but nobody has said anything about him not being able to go to work .
I know he has missed over a week so far.

The NAR policy has a $5,000 deductible per Bodily Injury & Property Damage Claim. Members are personally responsible for payment of the first $1,000 of the deductible.

This is how it was explained to me: The insured flyer is responsible for the first $1000, NAR covers the next $4000, and then our insurance comes into play.
I hope things don't exceed this, but I've not gotten any bills yet. Imagine my excitement when they do show up... :y:
My insurance is decent (I think), so I'm guessing I'll have to cover 20%. Then there are the doctor visits. I had two the first week, plus one a week since then. Now I have to see a wound specialist concurrent with the Dr visits. I missed a full week of work immediately after the accident, and now since they are pretty sure it's infected, I'm off for a second week. I'm using vacation time to cover those weeks, but will be out of paid time off Thursday this week since I missed Friday last week. Tomorrow I see the wound care specialist again, and Friday my regular dr yet again (a weekly thing until the stitches are out). Hopefully, I'll be able to go back to work next Monday, but I won't know until Friday at the earliest.
I'm trying to keep a positive outlook, and really, I feel fine except for a little constant pain in the immediate wound area. I get occasional shooting pains through the wound area that are really fun :bangbang:

As I said before, things could have been much worse, as there were several children near me. If one of them would have been hit, it would have been much worse. It's also lucky that the pyramid didn't gain any altitude. So, I'll limp for a while and have a nasty scar. Oh well, I was never gonna win a sexiest leg contest anyhow... :eyepop:
Suffice it to say that to those of you who've donated, thank you from the bottom of my motor mount... Err, Heart, yeah, that's it.... I'd post a pic of the wound's current condition, but I'm pretty sure no one wants to see it (especially during breakfast, lunch, or supper.... Sorry, not fancy enough around here for dinner).
OK, I've rambled on long enough.

Teddy,
Honestly, I can already laugh at it. I have to. Especially after I've explained it to so many healthcare people who give me VERY odd looks...

Ohhh man,,
I bet this is a toughy to explain to a medical professional how this happened,,, lol...
There are most certainly no explanations necessary here though...
Nothing matters but you feeling better....
Don't you sweat anything Adrian....
Time is relentless,,
And time heals all.....

Teddy..

Well, they pulled the stitches out today....
Holy cowbells! :y: After 16 days, I think some of them were starting to take root :eyepop: Feels like someone is constantly poking my leg with a pin now.
Advil time!! :horse:

To those of you that I know who donated to the fund thingy, thank you VERY much from the bottom of my heart.
To those of you who I don't know who donated, thank you even more...

Lies!!!! Oppressive heretic rumors!!!! I looked like a drowned cat after wading through the swamp, and smelled worse :eyepop:
I had swamp rats trying to get my phone number. My dog though I smelled good enough to roll on... And she usually prefers Coyote poop....
Nice of Russ to volunteer to retrieve rockets for me @ MWP; no swamps down in Princeton.... I'm aiming for the creeks every chance I get :neener: :neener:

I got a phone call tonight from Ms. Kolms. Had a nice chat, she wanted to know how I was doing. Very nice of her to call.

Wow! Now your a rocket celebrity! Some achieve it by years of sweat and hard work on ever more intricate and astounding projects whereas others, dare I say, make it by accident... ;)

Hey Hey Hey, I gave up sweat, tears and a LOT of blood to get this far....
I was quite surprised (and a little overwhelmed) to get a call from her.

Adrian

Wow,,,
I remember here in the northeast at 3 different launches 400 miles apart
people were having a conversation about some nut that went through a swamp to get his rocket back.....

I thought they were only kidding.....lol...

First up, best wishes for Adrian's full and rapid recovery from his injury.

I have come and gone a number of times from active rocketry. This story makes me wonder about our safety record as far as injuries directly caused by a rocket in flight or under power (land shark).

How many injury accidents of this sort have there been?

I keep up with serious accidents in the model aircraft world and there have been 7-8 fatalities over many years in the US caused by model aircraft and helicopters. Two of these have occurred since 2000 and both were caused by RC helicopters, about 10 years apart.

I had access to some insurance company statistics for both model aircraft and rockets when I was briefly involved with the Sport Fliers Association in the early 1990s and recall that rocketry related claims were vanishingly rare.

I think the LPR and HPR safety codes really do have an impact on the low injury rate. Could you imagine a sort of free-for-all rocket launch? Everyone brings his own pad and launch controller, there's no RSO, there no LCO, no one knows what anyone else is doing, people are standing ten feet away from N motors when they are ignited?

No, we have a pretty good safety program, and it shows.

A few years ago,,,
Brooklyn New York,,,
In the park alongside the Belt Parkway half mile from the Verrazano bridge...
A 21 year old man EXTREMELY skilled and experienced with nitro heli's....
He asked his father to come watch him fly,,,
He was practicing some new moves for his upcoming trip,, I think it was to Joe Nall,,
the premier event of the year for RC,, he was going to fly exhibition, in front of the crowd...
his father was right there watching......

I believe this is what you are referring to. I remember hearing about it now. Very sad :(

That was one of the RC heli fatalities. The other one was a nitro heli in 2003 in Houston. Those are the only US RC fatalities in recent times.

We probably should not derail Adrians thread, but I was curious about other injuries caused by a rocket hitting a person.

I think I remember reading something many months ago about a woman who was standing too close to a high-power launchpad and got burned by the exhaust of an M motor. Of course, you're supposed to be standing no closer than 500 feet from an M motor at launch, so the safety code was not being followed.
