In 1943 Jimmy Stewart lived in my grandfather's house here in Boise. He was a pilot instructor and at the time grandpa and grandma were in Alameda, Cali welding ships for the war and the house was empty. The Air Corps needed places for the men to live, so many were in tents. The grandparents volunteered the house for use. As Mr. Stewart was an instructor he was bivouacked at the house until he received orders to head to Europe to fly bomber missions. When grandpa and grandma came up to see how the house was doing my mom shared the room with Mr. Stewart. She was 5 years old :)

I remember watching SAC on a B/W teevee at my grandmother's cottage on a long wet rainy day 45 or so years ago.

The cottage was about 15 miles away from an AFB and a couple times a summer they'd do scramble drills and dozens and dozens of B-52's would take off and land in succession. Plus the windows were always rattling with sonic booms. Always got a little nervous, even as a kid, despite knowing it was "just a drill."

Does anyone remember the movie "Fail Safe" ? There was a remake a few years ago, but I'm referring to the 1964 version with Henry Fonda as president. Great movie.

Great movie, never got the attention it deserved as it came out the same YEAR...AFTER Dr. Strangelove...movie goers couldn't take the subject seriously after laughing about the insanity of nuclear war.

One thing I remember about the movie is Dom DeLuise has small part as the technician in SAC command who is ordered to tell the Russians how to defeat the jamming on the attacking bombers.

MaxQ, Thanks for up-loading the clips. I'll say it again, this is great movie.

Yep, great movie, and about 180 degrees from the tone of Col. Stewart's SAC "recruiting poster". What a difference a decade makes.
