I've been trying to find photos of the 2-stage Nike-Nike Smoke, which used a Nike booster under a Nike Smoke sounding rocket. I've seen a number of references to their use, but no pictures showing the configuration. Anyone have anything?

I had no idea it existed! I know of a scale version from TCC that flew great, can share video and pictures over the weekend. Hah, I thought the builder was simply being creative.

I have a complete Wallops island log and launch data with loads of Nike boosted sounding rockets but a Nike-Nike smoke is not even mentioned. I'll do a little more digging but I do not believe that configuration ever actually flew. Perhaps it was proposed but for some reason did not make the cut;)

There were a series of Nike-Nike launches in 1978-79 that did aeronomy smoke/chemical releases. I know there were a couple of flights listed from Wallops- May 20 and 22 1978 Can't find much more info about the launches.

I had a tour of the fire control part of the Army Air Defense Nike Missile site NY-56 at Sandy Hook NJ. I start another thread about that.

Here's the link to the Ajax photos https://s31.photobucket.com/user/Handeman/library/Rockets/Nike%20Ajax.

Here's the link to the Nike Hercules pics https://s31.photobucket.com/user/Handeman/library/Rockets/Nike%20Hercules

Also some pics of the rockets at Wallops Island visitor center from 2011 https://s31.photobucket.com/user/Handeman/library/Rockets/Wallups%20Island%202011 that has a 2 stage Nike-Cajun.

Pretty much that was all I came up with also. Not a single photo in my library Sorry.

Hi Guys,

Don't post much but I saw this thread and it got my attention. Yes, they existed but were mainly for research beyond
80K AGL ... mainly you will see Ajax or Apache configurations, but a Nike-Nike is the Booster with the ISC you find on Apache and another booster stacked on top with the conical nose-cone. As it turns out most of the information on this
is buried in the "Standard Nike Fins" document from Atlantic Research (they made components).
I found this on NTRS and have a copy, if you're interested please contact me off-forum (no way to attach PDF).

You can find most of the common info on the Nike Smoke from the NTRS Site (https://ntrs.nasa.gov/ - search for "Development of a Smoke Trail Vehicle " - NASA Technical note D 2009

Finally, here's the 1/4 scale version I did a couple years ago (K2045->K2045).

NOTE: These are two Performance rocketry 1/4 scale kits with an ISC.

I also had a failed 1/3 scale at DairyAire that year (with a beautiful machined transition made by James Marino)
and plan to fly again this year in October at October Skies.

If you want more details, contact me via email offline.

PS, every year we have a mass launch of 1/4 scale Nike Smokes, you can find the details on our website.

I don't ever recall seeing a Nike-Hercules with interstage openings like that. Is this common?

It should be to vent the gas when the top stage fires. You see if a lot in sounding rockets and some commercial ones as well.

The second stage seems latched on (it should be, for reliability reasons- no friction fit, that's for sure.), presumably to let it build up thrust or something (I'm basing this off the photos) and if that's the case, without the vents, the interstage transition would be blown apart by the pressure.

There were 3 different versions of the Nike Hercules A, B, and C, the B model was the most commonly deployed and therefore I assume the most photographed, C-models were developed in 1972. The picture you are referring to could be a A or C model, but just for S's and G's here is yet another one with a different interstage coupler.
