Wait... What?

I'm confused. This is set in the original Star Trek universe (pre-JJ Abrams reboot). Includes Chekov and Tuvok etc.. I read up on the link at the top... this seems to be "professionally produced fan fiction" not endorsed by the STAR TREK franchise. I didn't even know something like this was possible without getting squashed by a lawsuit. Hmmm.

Anybody got a good explanation of how this works?

Recently, a fan made "gritty" Power Rangers reboot attracted some attention. Initially the rights holders issued take down notices, but backed out after it turned out to be rather bad PR.

There are several Star Trek sites out there. As long as they don't make money off of these videos they are usually tolerated. The one below is the one I have been watching. The guy in charge has actually built a sound stage that houses all of the sets. The two main ones have even have recruited actors from the original Star Trek series to reprise their roles as guest stars; George Takei, Walter Koenig, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Denise Crosby and William Windom.

They did try to use the Renegades film to try to reboot a spin off series.

As a backer, I was able to see the full movie, but without the final special effects editing. Waiting to see the final version.
