The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots

https://www.stopkillerrobots.org/

More than 1,000 artificial intelligence researchers, scientists, and related professionals have signed an open letter issued in Buenos Aires today that calls for a ban on autonomous weapons that select and engage targets without human intervention, thereby swelling the ranks of the rapidly growing global movement to address the weapons. The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots welcomes the call, which is available on the website of the Future of Life Institute.

The letter is being presented today (28 July 2015) at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Much media attention has focused on the hi-level signatories to the letter, which include Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallin, Professor Stephen Hawking, and Professor Noam Chomsky.

A robot (or AI system) may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot (or AI system) must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot (or AI system) must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Why, there's yer problem! #1 and #2 aren't programmed often enough. They weren't used in "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (outstanding "sleeper" film), in "2001: A Space Odyssey," in "The Terminator," in many TOS Star Treks episodes, etc. Of course, if you're specifically designing an AI system to kill then those laws can't be programmed in.

Do I expect their preventative efforts to be successful? Nah.

But if we don’t have autonomous killing machines; what are we going to use against the Zombie Apocalypse?
