Just sent my resume to a job opportunity in Yantai China.

It's not a sure thing, but it's one small step for a man...

Good luck! You're on your way!

I always liked that song, but I think the guy might be singing through a mouthful of peyote buttons. Sounds like he says, "Oh-buh-de-zee, oh-buh-de-yum" and something about the "Simian Way." The group looks like people I would have known at HSU during the early 90's.

Thanks Guys!

Got another email from the Principal at the school in Yantai, looks like she liked what she saw. I've got a Skype interview on Sunday (Beijing time)/Saturday (PDX time).

Yesterday, I also had lunch with the former teacher who put us in touch with each other. I got to ask her a lot of question, and she had answers that matched up with the information I've learned about.

This may very well be happening.

Wow,,
That's really super cool..
Good for you man...
You're going to do just fantastic there..
I'm even excited for ya,, lol...

Well, bro-we're gonna miss you around here. I should put you in touch with my son- he's been over there for almost 4 years now teaching English in Shanghai. You would be a little (a lot!) north of him and it's surprising how the weather changes from area to area. Be advised of a few things first: 1) they eat EVERY part of an animal, plant, fish or insect they can find. Everything has a mystical wondrous power rooted in antiquity to disguise the fact you are eating snail testicles. 2) They are still communistic with a large overdose of capitalism. 3) Even tho' they save on shipping-there are NO 49 cents stores over there-sad! 4) There was an ENTIRE ersatz Apple store there complete with Apple knock-offs. Don't buy any "Rolax" watches. 5) The Chinese gubmint does NOT approve of Western influence on it's teens. no facebook and no video games. 6) Banking is archaic and shipping in or out is glacial. 7) The place is just breathtakingly beautiful. Make as many excursions as possible while you are there- you'll never see them all, but sample as many as you can get to. Got my fingers crossed for ya-it's the adventure of a lifetime!

I hope you are not shy, because there are very few men only or women only toilets. Just one big village toilet with side by side holes that everyone uses together. Good luck.

Are you going to wear your Viking gear during the Skype interview?

Sorry Thirsty, I think I'll save that for my first day at work... (unfortunately, that didn't show the kilt).

fyrwrxz, I'll be glad to try and get in touch w/your son. Thanks for the pointers... I'll try to avoid the snail testicles.

@Cylon Rocketeer: Way ahead of you. I've talked to Mike Fisher and was told that he can ship to China, so I may be working on a 伶盗龙 (líng dào lóng)(aka Velociraptor) when I get there. I wonder if He or Mark could make a set of Bitchin decals with the characters instead of the traditional name decals... hmmm...

@tightwad... I doubt that a city of 5 million will have a lack of his and hers facilities... Otherwise, it's not a problem (especially if I wear the kilt).

hahahaha,,
You guy's are all just wonderful...
And this absolutely is the adventure of a lifetime,,
All the best to you,,,
You will do fantastic...

( I don't know about how well the kilt will go over though )....

Teddy

Thanks Teddy!

Oh, and guys, I think I'll still be able to participate on the forums... just with a different angle on things.

All The Best!
Jim

Ok, here's a status update...

I had a Skype interview with the principal last weekend. I think it went well.

I'm now mostly trying to tie up the medical issues I want addressed (follow up on the sleep study, some moles removed, and a colonoscopy) as well as the Health Check that China requires for its work visas.

I'm also waiting for the decision of PSU's appeals committee on the use of Japanese Art History in the place of an approved Global Perspectives cluster course (Indian Art History already is, but I didn't take that). Presuming that it is (98%+ likely to be approved), I've graduated from PSU. Pending one revision to my teaching philosophy statement my TESOL portfolio is approved. However, the philosophy statement that was sent back to me for revision was the original, un-revised version, and I know that there was a revised version submitted (and possibly overlooked). The diploma (or proof of pending graduation), and the TESOL certificate are the real hold ups.

Problem is the VA has the colonoscopy scheduled for AFTER I need to be in China...

You could stop off in Thailand or Malaysia for a "medical tourism" colonoscopy. Swallow a miniature camera inside a pill, and relax on the beach while it films its Fantastic Voyage through your inner workings.

For some reason I don't object to Raquel Welch passing through my digestive system, bit I absolutely draw the line at Donald Pleasence !!!

6 years after I was first told to get a colonoscopy I'm finally getting one (next week). Man I hate my old insurance companies "We won't pay for one as you aren't 50 yet, and you don't have any symptoms". Hell, usually by the time you have symptoms, it's too late anyway.

Although I'm not looking forward to the actual procedure, I'm actually looking forward to getting it done, and I've read Dave Barry's account.

The procedure's not that bad--they give you Valium--it's the prep that's awful.

I had my first and thus far only colonoscopy last summer at the tender age of 69. I was relieved to receive a generally clean bill of health. The worst part of the procedure was the pre-procedural bowel evacuation cocktail. Absolutely no pain afterword and it's good to know that all systems are go!

Good luck to you and your Chinese adventure. :D

My dad had a colonoscopy and told me that after the MoviPrep stuff, he felt really pooped out.

I haven't had a colonoscopy, but I'm kind of looking forward to it. I'm told there will be flowers, and candle-light, and Nat King Cole singing "Unforgettable." It sounds lovely.

My first colonoscopy came back positive...
It's been a long story and a long bout since then...
I've had 5 colonoscopy's since...
I just read Dave Barry's article....
I was laughing till I cried....

That is definitely worth the read......

I've heard that you really don't want the ABBA version.

OK, today's news...

As of yesterday, I'm OFFICIALLY a graduate from Portland State University with a BA in Applied Linguistics and a TESOL certificate recipient.

My diploma has been requested early, and I should receive it by Tuesday next week.

Now all I have is the medical issues to get straightened out, and the visa paperwork done, and I'm ready to go if they are.

Pointy Side Up!
Jim
