Quest external battery connector

This 450 mah 3S LiPo battery would be a great substitute for an alkaline 9 volt battery with a nominal 12 volt output with the weight of the transistor battery. It just might fit inside the controller as well. https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking...65_130c_lipo_pack_e_flite_blade_180_cfx_.html

Hobby King has many 2S or 3SP LiPo battery that will work. Just remember that the Quest launcher is designed for Quest igniters and the limiting factor for other applications is likely to be the current rating of the wire and the switches.

I made an external battery connector for my Quest controller that I hook up to a 12V car jump starter. The "armed" beeper and light don't work with the more powerful battery, but I get a nice quick whoosh when I push the button.
 
I have a Quest Aerospace 9V controller which we love. I saw that they make an adaptor for 6V lantern Batteries.

My question is will the controller handle a 12V battery?

Yes it will work fine. This answer is based on actually using the EBC with assorted external batteries.

I do need to test it with the Estes controllers that use 9V batteries but I would expect it to work.

Don't short the clips as the wires are relatively thin and they will cook if you hold the launch button with a short at the clips. Basically, if the motor or motors do not ignite right away when using a strong battery, release the launch button before frying the controller or wires.
 
If moving to LiPo consider minimum voltage required to keep them alive. On possible work around to ensure LiPo survives is to use a heavy duty BEC which can cut the power from the LiPo once it reaches critical low.
