Oh man would I like to go to this.
Unfortunately I don’t travel well anymore so I’ll just have to send a drone in my place.
Ta-Da-Boom!!

But seriously folks; is this going to be cool upon cool or what.
FAA rulings look very much like they're going to severely hamper both civilian commercial and hobby "drone" use in the US. Line of sight ONLY restrictions make the very cool hardware on sites like DIY Drones pretty much useless unless you want to spend that kind of money doing programmable waypoint/GPS flights only within line of sight and within range of manual control override by the human pilot. Very limiting.

I wonder sometimes how long it will be before rules, regulations, restrictions, laws, limitations, licenses, fees, fines, foes, taxes, tariffs and terrorism doesn’t lead to such, that the much of appeal of this hobby is lost.

If there weren't so many complete idiots in the world who do things like crash quads into a highrise in New York and have it crash to the sidewalk below or fly them a few hundred feet from the flight path of landing passenger jets, taking video the entire time and then posting it on YouTube, or flying a friend's quad that's not for beginners without adequate previous experience while drunk and having it land on the White House lawn, we wouldn't have so many regulations. Morons ruin it for everyone and there are far too many morons...

EDIT: Within the Amazon comments about that sci-fi book, I find "Written around 1951, this is a story about the future (from their standpoint) and how those of lesser intelligence bred like rabbits, while the smarter people refrained, and how this led to the population having an average IQ of 40." That's exactly the setup for the film "Idiocracy," so it makes me wonder if they didn't steal the idea from that book.
