NASA's Mach 8 Rocket Sled Railroad

Holloman AFB sled track documentary, narrated by Col. John Stapp.

I've been to the remains of the sled track at Edwards. It was absolutely straight for a few miles as I recall. Even vertically, it appeared to curve upwards because the curvature of the earth.

The Edwards sled track also has a decent historical claim to being the origin of a statement by a certain Air Force Captain Murphy.

I did three tests on this track back in the 80's. The tests were at 350, 450 and 550 knots. They used the motors from surplus WWII Zuni rockets to power the sled for our tests. The sleds don't use wheels, they just brute force the sleds down the track, steel clamps holding the sled onto the steel rails.
