Got some great test flights in today, the XL-5 was perfect as is, one flight and done. The UFO was tail heavy, I needed two flights to get it to be less pitchy on boost, and then toned the throws on pitch down a bit more for the next two flights, the glides were outstanding, had about an 8 mph constant breeze and it would just hover in place, looked great.

George Rachor got a cell phone video of flight number 2 on the UFO, still slightly tail heavy and a bit too munch control throw, but you can see the glide is pretty good.

Funny you should mention that, was drawing this up this morning...Sort of a flyable take on a USS Atlantis....I sort of liked the Atlantis idea, but to have the upper middle disk in an area that was behind the flight cg meant I had to use a single warp engine, which also helps reduce some tail weight.

Does the UFO Invader hint at any further 'enterprises'?

Finished construction and did some glide tests to confirm CG, looks like it might work. Need to think about trim and the little fiddly bits on the warp engine...2.6" diameter, warp engine is 1.6", length is 35.3" and wingspan is 22". 7.25 oz dry now.

Here it is with some fiddly bits.... Decided the bridge would be in the middle and the front would have the radar dish.....since I didn't want the nose to be a cockpit...

I was torn, the plain rounded nose looked like it wanted a cockpit, but that didn't fit, I did go back to my original plan and inset the dish into the nose, I do like the idea of a dish, besides without a deflector dish you'd run into asteroids and space junk when in warp.

I spent the evening hand cutting markings, didn't turn out too bad. Me

I did a torture test yesterday, 10 flights on E-20PW rocket motors, these give about a 150mph boost speed, and unless the glider is perfectly trimmed it would be a disaster since there is no time to steer:) I don't recommend these motors as they are more expensive per flight and don't get you any higher altitude, just a bigger scare on boost:) These are still branded by aerotech as E-15PW but the new ones with yellow extended forward ejection well and built in thrust ring are now actually E-20PW which a shorter burn, lower total impulse but higher peak.

Will these aircraft/ rockets come to market and are the flight controls R/C?

Flew the Forrestal today, flew perfect off the board

I forgot I had another video of the Forrestal, I had a bit more wind on launch, but it got some better angles as I was turning....I mis judged the headwind but just made it onto the runway...

I'm doing a short run of my Pegasus 2 kit that was based on the kit I did last year that used a full flying tail. It uses a unified tail/wing construction that allowed me to lower the price and make assembly easier. I had pre-cut the wing just like I would for a kit and once the tubes arrived yesterday at 5:00 I was able to put it together, install the radio, put the markings on and do a maiden flight in under 2 hours:) Maiden was done in about 10 mph winds. 38" long, ,2.6" diameter, 22" wingspan, 10.75 oz rtf here with a 24mm E-6. Glide is not bad considering I have only one sq foot of wing area. It uses independent hinged elevators only for both roll and pitch and works pretty well.

Had a great LDRS trip, here are some great shots from the Montalvos, and a few from me with the rocket rack loaded for transport. 27 flights for 4 days. Here are the HABU, my Colonial Viper and the Der Himmelsjaeger.

Frank,

You're an inspiration to all of us. Your work played a big role into my getting into R/C rocket gliders.

Here are some other great shots from LDRS 37 from many people who shared on the dropbox site, credit and thanks to them.

I updated my Orbital Shuttle kit now to have a bottom mounted dihedral wing more like the original orbital transport glider and am calling it the Classic Orbital Shuttle. It is easier to assemble due to no slotting of the body tube. I was able to reduce a few parts and bring the price down below $60. It flies like the original, but is a bit more stable in glide since the dihedral wants to keep it upright. The rail buttons are on the side of the model and the servos are on the top of the wing and so nothing to catch on when landing on rough surfaces. Dimensions are the same as the original BT-80(2.6") diameter, 20" wingspan, 32" length, 11.25 oz rtf.

Instructions are here: https://dynasoarrocketry.com/?page_id=1505 and flight video is here:

I also put together a stratodart 2 kit with TWA markings that looks really good, and I now have more decals for the Pegasus kit so can keep making those for a while as well.

Here's a great video of a Night Flight with one of my RC Rocket glider kits with lights added, at the very end of the flight he stalls it and when it drops the nose cone slips out but he still manages to land it okay

Thats pretty cool, was it the lumenescent wire type lights?

They are some LED light strips that he pressed into the foam wing and then taped over it with a clear film. Ill try to get some more info on that it's amazing how well they shined through the foam under the top even how bright they were at night.
