New to 3d printing and having a lot of fun with it. Sleds are the next project to start. If anyone has a sled file they are willing to share I would appreciate it. Otherwise I will share as I build.

Thanks

Tried that without much luck. Lots of neat rocketry stuff but not sleds. What search term are you using?

A couple vendors on this forum are selling 3D printed altimeter sleds as part of their business.

I realize that some people are selling sleds they have designed and printed. However the global movement seems to be sharing of information so that items can be produced where they are needed.

The file maybe consider intellectual property.
By giving it out; it exposes them to cheaper knock offs.... similar to what the Chinese have gotten away with for years!
For a fee you can buy them.

Someone not too long ago tried a similar approach to buying OoP kits that he said was for his own collection.
What really happened was he took some for people for a ride then resold them on E-bay for an absurd markup.

For free file sharing try p2p client

The innovation and design is the hard and most valuable part of the process. That is why the global business movement is usually design/development in the first world and commodity production in the third world.

Not everyone is included in that global movement. Be sure to thank those that are and that you have capitalized on.

All I can say is "design your own and share for the next guy".

When somebody is in business to make money why would they give the files away? You a socialist?

Lots of people are making stuff and sharing their work. Maker bot is full of neat things like rocket egg stands, fin cans and nose cones. I enjoy making and learning new things, and sharing the fun with others. When I finish I will upload what I have.

Everywhere I go I find friendly and helpful rocketeers. This is a nice defining feature of the community. It does not need another label or a McCarthy inquiry.

Nothing wrong with sharing when you can. I have quite a few thingiverse/youmagine designs I share freely (probably some of the model rockets you saw!)

As long as I'm producing sleds for sale I don't plan on making the files available. Too much time and effort involved for something so easily reproduced from the source files.

Other than my products, I'm not really aware of any other sleds out there. I have seen a few people who have built them directly into some small 3D printed rockets though.

What kind of printer/CAD are you using?

Exactly, You take the time effort and money so why give it away so someone can do it cheaper? If someone wants to learn about it, I suspect there are free files for the "plastic wrench or birdhouse" and then try and design rocket stuff yourself. Kurt

I read this again and still don't get it. If there is a desperate "need" for altimeter sleds, then the needy can buy them from Landru and Missileworks like everybody else.

Yeah...strange business model: Everything should be free because the "the global movement seems to be sharing of information so that items can be produced where they are needed."

These are my points exactly. It takes time, energy and some skill to create a printable design. If someone is generous enough to create a design and share it, then fantastic. However, you can't expect those who have successfully created a business model to share the intellectual property that they are profiting from. However, if someone feels there ought to be an "open source" altimeter sled out on the 3d print sites, I encourage that person to find a way to make it so.

Honestly, I don't think that it would be that hard to design a basic, simple sled in one of the 3d tools - 2 tubes and a flat mounting area. Start with that and see what the 3d print community can add to it while keeping it open source. THAT is how the "global movement of sharing information" works. People who are willing to collaborate on a project with the express intent of making it freely available to all who want it.

It's difficult to respond to comments attributing me to things I have not done or said. I am new to 3D printing and enjoy learning new things. As I get time over the holidays I will see what I can come up with for a sled. And I will share my results. I only have 7 hours left on my trial sketchup program and a local library to use. I trust that proven and tested professionally designed products would be better, or they can sell out of convenience. That's the value within the property. For those who I have still offended their understanding of capitalism I have enjoyed your free sharing of ideas and experience aka intellectual property.

Yeah, I thought it was funny his FREE trail was going to expire, I guess he won't be able to spread sunshine any more. (oops did I say that out loud) The little voice in my head also wanted to say that learning and knowledge is usually acquired by doing.

It is a good bet that he has no financial stake in the 3d printer, either. Probably using print time provided by his employer or uni.

Strange business model, indeed. Some funny stuff going on in the Great White North?

Ok, I am done piling on this thread.

My greatest applause to all who have responded here....
This request is far from reasonable,, and actually a bit insulting to the intelligence....
I have purchased from Andrew D. quite a few times already..
He has a fantastic product to offer.. I am sure that didn't happen overnight..
There must have been a great deal of trial and error,, and time and effort and expense involved in getting where he is now..
Businesses have for many years looked for something that they could spend staggering amounts of money on to "tool up" to produce in mass quantity at a fantastic mark up..
It may take years to re-coop the initial investment,, but history dictates it's worth it if it's an item that will sell for a long time..

I've made all types of harnesses,, from Kevlar rescue harnesses for the U.S. Federal government to ATV Tow straps,, and certainly harnesses for rocketry recovery...
The harnesses I am making are the best harnesses High Power has ever seen..
I say that with modesty,, how?? Anyone could make the harnesses I make,,
if I sat them down and showed them how and they took the time and an enormous amount of repetition to acquire the skill and knowledge to do it...
It's taken me years to be able to produce the quality of product I make,, it certainly didn't happen overnight..
I have been asked specific questions about how and why and what material and which stitch- when,, even specifics about the machine.....
When I try as best I can without hurting feelings to dance around the question I've sensed the person asking the question getting a little bit mad at me....

No,,, this is not a reasonable request at all...

Respectfully

I ask the moderator to close this thread. People really are having fun on their soapbox and have taken it in a completely different direction than the reasonable question I started with. I have not asked anyone for their intellectual property of items they were producing for sale. I have not expected free work to be done on my behalf. I have offered my contribution to the community in the same way that I asked if others have. I contribute significantly in my local community for free and similarly volunteer online as I am able. I am grateful for this free forum and know that this discussion is only possible through the efforts of like minded people.
