It's mostly a personal preference thing, both work fine for our hobby. I have three of the wide and am happy with them.

Do you have a sample video you could post for me too have a look at please. Thanks.

This is the standard version 1080P/30. You can also use standard or narrow mode in the camera with the Windows interface program. This was in standard mode.

Nice video Chris. Its seems like rockets with 4 fins tend to spin less than 3 fin rockets. Don't know if that's really the case, but my own personal experience suggests so.

I understand the Mobius can also use a cable to extend the lens. For example you could keep the bulk of the camera inside the rocket, with only the lens on the outside.

The tube was pre-slotted by LOC in a jig. I also routed the edges of the fins with a round over bit on my router table.

I have a standard lens möbius. In my view the wide lens is a bit too wide, a bit of fisheye on it. You've seen my YouTube videos - they are all standard möbius lens.

Funny, I've been wondering the opposite. I build mainly 3 fin rockets and this has been my experience with hand glued delta fins:

I think I prefer the wide angle lens.

IMHO if you can move it forward the standard version will work out better. If you're mounting the camera near the back end of the rocket then I might go with the wide version.

We have the wide angle lens and get good video mounting it just forward of the fins. Here is a video of my Red Tailed Extreme on an M1297 for my L-3 flight:

As it turns over at apogee, the wide angle lens gives you the impression that you can see the curvature of the earth. At 13k, it's an illusion, but I don't always tell people that....
Regardless of the lens, Mobius HD video is hard to beat.

Here's a video from my Mobius with the wide-angle lens. The rocket is 86" long and 3" diameter, and the camera is pretty close to the top of the airframe.

I used an 808 not a mobius but I used a wide angle and turned it 90 degrees and tilted it back 40 degrees. The result was a view as wide as most standard lenses and tall enough to catch the body and fins in the very bottom of the frame and the horizon at the top. Made for an amazing view even at only 2k ft.

Cool, how did you do the altimeter and airspeed indicators in the video?

It is very easy to change the lens module so you can always change it later on, just the lenses can be changed but then you have to refocus.
I like the higher quality and the faster frame rates, so that means a narrower field of view. I've tried the standard lens and now I'm going to try the wide.

Think I got a card for it
I thought they came with a card.

Thanks! I got that question often enough that I wrote a how-to for it: https://danno.org/RocketBlog/howto_dashware.php

I should also point out that the native video quality of these cameras is much better than YouTube videos indicate. The YouTube video is highly compressed and loses a lot of fine detail, especially when there is a lot of background movement in the frame (typical with rocketry videos).

I agree. I have the Mobius (A lens) and shoot almost exclusively in 720p 60 fps. Post processing always diminishes the quality.

Just checked out the Dashware website, looks like they're either not making it anymore or out of business. Got any suggestions to alternative software?

Wide cam lens. First ever onboard video... Well.. First one recovered successfully. Tried once with a keychain cam... That's sitting in a field somewhere.

Enjoy.

Wow. I was surprised to see that they had suspended sales of the software. "We decided to temporarily disable downloads and new sales in order to focus on our next release." Hopefully that's only temporary.

Edit: I just found their Facebook page, and the comments there make it sound as if the company has dropped off the face of the earth. That's bizarre. They had a good product and a niche market all to themselves - they could have kept selling it forever even if they hadn't developed it further.

To answer your question - no, I don't know of any other software that does this.

Timbucktoo (and anyone else interested):

I just looked at DashWare's website today, and not only have they miraculously sprang back to life, the Dashware software is now FREE!
