The MAKE:Blog reported on how iPhone developer and rocketeer Michael Koppelman has developed an IPhone app that logs the iPhone’s GPS and accelerometer data and sends the GPS data over the Web so that the rocket can be located. You can read more about this work on Michael's blog.

Pertinent links are here. https://rocketdungeon.blogspot.com/2008/11/iphone-as-rocketry-electronics.html

I see some drawbacks, but I still found it pretty cool.

If the data shows a max of 3 gees acceleration when he was expecting 12 gees, I wonder if the iPhone accelerometer has a limited range and maxes out at 3 gees or something. I also wonder if the accelerometer data agrees with the GPS data, assuming he compared (assuming it was possible to compare) the two.

I have to admit that my interest was largely academic and I'm sure there are limitations/issues. Just logging, receiving GPS is cool. Of course it will only work as a locator if it lands in an area with cell connectivity. Although cool, if I were to risk something that costs that much, I'd buy a 'real' flight computer.

Yeah...How likely is someone going to send up their $600 cell phone? Not me!..Shoot, let along even HAVE a $600 cell phone!

*$600 was used just as a reference as I have no clue what an Iphone goes for, nor do I really care to know how much they go for!:p

Don't think the iPhone is anywhere near that cost. But you get me thinking...can't you buy 'no questions asked' insurance for phones? Can't get that for flight computers.

I wouldn't even want to do that with the cellphone that I paid $9.95 for. I kinda need it to receive phone calls.

There's been more than one occasion when I got a work call at a launch that putting my cellphone in a rocket seemed to be a good idea.

But to keep on topic, why does an iPhone have an accelerometer?

It's pretty cool. You turn it on it's side and the screen adjusts to be upright. It also allows thing like games that are orientation sensitive and other interesting UI features.

Cool, but I don't have one. I might even consider the cost to buy one...but I don't want to pay for the service :(

That's pretty cool technology. I want one so bad!

An iPhone with 8G of memory is $200, think.

Again that's a subsidized priced. If you were to break your phone and buy a replacement i think it costs $499 for a 8 GB.

That's very cool. I wondered how that worked but was too lazy to do the research.
