Time to break these out:
Dad's Rules On Dating
Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.
Rule Two:...
post these pictures and your description over on http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/ somebody over there will probably recognize it.
I went to church with a gentleman who was a tail gunner in a B-17, was shot down over Germany and put in several POW camps for 1 year, 1 day. Here is an article about him published a few months ago....
lookin' schweet! i am dying to get these two in the air...
Upscale Yellow Jacket
129700
Mercury Atlas scratch build
129701
15mph winds, and clouds forced us to cancel today too :(
plus the field is too soggy...at least we may not have fire bans next month! we are going to try to schedule 2 launches per month starting...
Yes, but if you can get the shape of the tip closer than I did, I will gladly update my drawing...it appears to be more of an elliptical shape than a true sphere, but I only have a set of dial...
but the video is awesome anyway!!! very cool how it is generating interest in space w/ the general public! checked last night...over 11M views!
here are some dimensions of the real thing...http://www.spacex.com/SpaceX_Brochure_V7_All.pdf
the 3.6m dia from the drawing is 1.655" on my model (over the wrap) which makes this a 1:85.8 scale....
you nailed my observations...(except I have NEVER met one, just observing on TV, etc) most astros do seem sterile...could be the engineering background* (I are one of those!!) I think Chris's...
Thanks to Ol' JR's suggestion, I made nozzles for the fake fins...had to notch them to fit over the dowel pin. I also had to notch the fins a little.
Rather than use thread for the hatbands, I...
I used this technique to build "Miss Atomic Bomb 1957" -- basically a stretched BT-80 V-2 w/ bomb-like fins.
I originally started out like you mention above, using longitudinal strips, but did not...
Oh, that's priceless, I love it!!!
Thanks aero...I did perform a swing test, and the model is stable w/ the existing fins...my ramblings above were mainly to point out the differences between RS and the finished model. I just...
Thanks Luke, I had considered nozzles like you show, I just ran out of Strib before I ran out of ideas :) Your examples are beautiful and may inspire me to press on...and yes, I was thinking of...
WOW! Thanks for the explanation. I have been wondering about "over stable" rockets since I live in Oklahoma, wind is a big part of our launches. What I have been doing is plotting the 2D flight...
yessir! thanks! how long before 13.04 goes production?
I do click on it every time I open OR (I have only run 12.09.1 and the previous release). When I click on new simulation tab, the wind speed is m/s, I just tried it with a blank sheet design. I...
Ah hah! It is that 3rd item (second "transition")...i was using the scale dimensions of the Mercury capsule. The forward dia is .68" butting against a .645" dia -- I changed it to .645 and the...
But why M 0.3? I am more worried about stability as the model leaves the rod, which would be more on the order of M 0.06 (~44 mph by Apogee recommendations)
Thanks for the quick response. I just opened OR, and started creating a new sim...yes, the preferences are showing "Imperial" but when I start a new simulation, the wind speed is m/s (I just noticed...
+3 on this!!! (see my thread http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?53435-Open-Rocket-strange-warning-on-a-complex-model-(Mercury-Atlas) )
I modeled a Mercury Atlas in RockSim using pods to simulate the nacelles and tubes I am using to mount removable fins. I played with porting it over to OR, and of course the pods don't come over. I...
I weighed the model and measured the CG.
Weight empty w/ 2 18" chutes, .75 oz lead in the base of the nose, fins in place = 7.25 oz. The CG measures 12.32 inches from the tip of the Mercury nose...
HAH! Yeah, I must be, because when a friend posted this, I understood completely...
Thanks for the compliments, can't wait to fly her!
Here are some close-ups of the tank and bits. In that last shot you can actually see the difference in the "shiny" silver and the dull.
When everything is totally dry, I will do a weight and...
BWAHAHAHAH!!!! It is painted!!!! The tower is on!!! The fins are complete!!!!
I went with the "frosted" paint scheme since the all-shiny models don't look "right" to me...the iconic pic is John...
Duplicolor makes both...I have to go to a NAPA automotive store to get "Acrylic Lacquer", but it seems that store only carries gloss colors in AL (white and black), and flats in enamel. AL is nice...
Did anybody notice something wrong with the last picture in the last group I posted??
the dowel was glued to the wrong end of the fin tube!!! :point::facepalm:
I discovered that when I got...
Beautiful! A MercAtlas in the same scale will be awesome!
