About lcorinth
About a year ago (as of this writing - August, 2014), I saw an Estes Silver Arrow launch kit at Target. I got one of these for Christmas when I was a kid, but I never put it together, because I figured I wouldn't do it right.

I texted my friend Chad, a fellow space geek, and said "Dude, we should maybe get some model rockets and launch them some time!"

A year went by. Then, in early July, Chad got some rockets, and on July 5, we went to a park and launched them. We lost three of five in trees, but it was AWESOME.

So, I thought I'd get a few cheap premade rockets of my own to launch. I didn't really have any interest in building my own, and figured I wouldn't be any good at it.

Then, I saw Der Red Max.

It was on Such a cool looking, beautiful rocket. There was only one left in stock, and it was only about 18 bucks, so I had to buy it. I decided it couldn't be that hard, so I took my time, followed the instructions carefully, and it turned out great. I kind of couldn't believe I'd built it myself.

Suddenly, I became obsessed with building my own rockets. I bought the Handbook of Model Rocketry, Googled a bunch of rocketry information, and ordered more rockets. I'm trying to learn something from each new build, and though I am new at it, I want to work my way up to bigger, better, more powerful, and more beautiful rockets.

I find the craft of building a rocket so satisfying, in a way I haven't really enjoyed with anything before. To me, rocketry is - at least - two hobbies in one. There's the build, when I'm not even thinking that much about launch day. I'm just trying to make the best rocket I can make, and make it look good assure it will perform well.

Then, there's the actual launch, which is such a thrill.

In the month that I've been doing this, I have learned a lot about a subject I knew nothing of before, and I've had a lot of fun. I've also connected with some interesting people in different parts of the world.
