What type of tube did you use for the baffle? Looks to be a vulcanized fiber (the stuff Blue Tube is made of) tube. Or is it just grey wrapped cardboard?

It does look just like Blue Tube, I hadn't realized that.

No, it not blue tube(never seen that stuff in person yet) it's just a reg cardboard bt-60 coupler. I just finished sanding the 1 fin & tacked it on with wood glue. I'll work on other fins later.

So I got my fins sanded & attached, I also got the holes for altimeter drilled in paypoad bay. I like them, but again I wish I made them a bit longer at root chord. Oh well, now I know.

Thank you guys, the bevels should help get a few more feet up there. So here is a few more pics.
I got 2 coats of wood glue fillets on the fins, and put down the first light coat of primer down so I can see the imperfections & fuzzies better, then I can sand & lay down a thicker primer coat.
2nd pic is a teaser of what I'm doing, I'm making this rocket a big brother that will fly on 29mm f-g's it will have the same NC on it, so just a bit taller & bit bigger motor, but just as skinny as lil bro, I just ordered some of big brothers parts online. 4th pic is lil bro next to my Hornet(arreaux) also lil bro & big bro are not their names:p

I got a bit more done of my scratch build E rocket, since the wifes fam & kids are here still it gave me a chance to hide out in the work shop today & get some paint on my rocket, so I sanded & layed down another coat of primer, I also got the payload bay & nose cone painted. The nose cone inspired the name.
Strange Clouds is this rockets name, I tried to make some, cloud effect with black & purple looming behind the white. It took a bit more paint then I wanted but I did get the effect I wanted, the pic dont do it justice(phone pic) but I like it. Yes the payload bay is staying white. Maybe tomorrow of next day I can get the body & fins painted.

I've been busy working away on a few rocket projects including helping build my buddies HP rocket, that was cool cause he let me build half on it. Anyway I worked on my E scratch build "Strange Clouds" as well as I built another mid power rocket stand & transporter, this one is for my rockets over 44" & eventually just for my 29mm rockets.

I'm almost done Strange Clouds, just got to let things dry & then do the white. I kinda think it needs pin stripes or something, it just seems to be missing something colour wise. What you guys think?
Picture 3860.jpgPicture 3862.jpg

That turned out awful nice!

I guess it could use some pinstripes, maybe on the upper portion, but I wouldn't say it needs them.

BTW, you do beautiful paintwork and come up with some amazing designs and names- I'm the only one in my family who has no type of artistic talent :)

I think it looks great!

If you want pin stripes, maybe some silver/chrome. You know, silver lining in every cloud...

Thanks guys!!! I'm putting the finishing touches on Strange clouds, I like the silver pinstripe, but it blends into the white to much, so I went with red. Now to let it dry & then add clear & it's done. I chose a 15" chute for this rocket.

Red should look real nice!

a 15" chute should work well especially if you plan to use mainly E motors. It could be a bit fast on the descent, but not by too much, depending on the wind. Will it be nylon or plastic?

Nate

It's a nylon chute, I chose 15" over 18" cause I dont want to much drifting, plus I'm using my 18" for another rocket. Ya it will mostly be a E12 rocket, but I do plan on trying a E30 in it, really it might become a E30 rocket. I dont know how high it will go on a E12, but I'm guessing only around 500' since it's heavy(I overbuilt it) & weighs in at 216grams loaded up & with an expended e12 motor.
What I really need to know is what delay to use, I got E12-6's but I'm not sure if they the optimal delay, any body got that answer? I still cant figure out open rocket enough to use it.
it is 216 grams, 3 fin, 41.5" tall, 1.6" tube, what delay should I use for a E12?

15" might be a tad small, but it should work. My Mini Eagle Claw which weighs 545g unloaded has a 12" chute and it comes down like a rock, but since it's fiberglass it doesn't care. Are launch activities on hold for the winter or do you keep flying year round?

OR says about 900 ft. my design is a rough estimate, but it's fairly close. 6 seconds is as close as you'll get delay wise, optimal is about 5.5 seconds.
Everything looks fine, very stable design, but it may be a bit quick on the way down. If it's overbuilt, it shouldn't be a problem though.

Nate

Well we did do one launch in nov, when temps were -7c & we were going to do a launch at end of year, but decided not to. Really we could have cause it got warmer & most of the snow we did get melted. Again we could have on new years but we focused on building & our other club founder is going for his written HP test on Jan 5 & another member is still building so we will wait, plus we want to do a big frozen lake launch, but everything is not frozen yet, only the small lakes are.
So to answer your queston, we will try to fly all year, but if it too cold, not cold enough, too much snow are all things that could stop our winter launch plans.
Thanks Nate, 6 sec delay it is!!

Here is the finished pic of Strange Clouds, I added thin red pinstripes at bottom & made upper stripes thicker. Now time for my next mid power build, stay tuned I got it started already but I'm waiting for parts to finish it.

That looks great! Well done!

Thank you! I just hope it flies as good as it looks ;)
Well mail came today with my 29mm-bt60 centering rings & my kevlar coard so i will be able to finish my next rocket build. Also my Ventris & STM showed up at the hobby store, so I got much to do.
So here is some pics & info of my next build.
It is a 29mm motor mount, BT-60 Tubes, baffle & cooling mesh, baffle style ring anchor for shock cord, 50.5" tall, 3 Fin
First pics are of the parts I'll be using & of fins I started to shape.
Picture 3865.jpgPicture 3884.jpg

I got my baffle glued together, epoxied an estes 29mm retainer on a 6" long MM tube, made my bulkhead out of 1/4" poplar wood, drilled holes in payload bay for altimeter, also attached nose cone to payload bay using 3 gold plated pan heads screws(i used the pan head so they would be more visable) since I'm not going for any altitude or speed records. I also added epoxy to the eyebolt on threads & at loop conection, just so nothing moves.
Picture 3885.jpgPicture 3886.jpgPicture 3896.jpg

Wow, you've got a lot of builds!!

looking nice, so far! the baffle is something I'd like to try some time; do you have a templagte you used for the rings on either side of the baffle?
That kevlar cord looks to be massively wide for a rocket of this size!? what type is it and how long?
btw, Strange clouds turned out awesome!! What paint did you use for the nosecone?

Nate

I actualy got even more, yet to be announced, right now I got 7, well 6 cause strange clouds is done.
The cord in above pic, is not the kevlar, thats just 1/2" braided elastic, 8.5' of it...well 8' now I tied it up.
Below is the kevlar leader I'll be using. It's 300lb, 12" long loop I attached to another 1/4" poplar bulkhead, I drilled holes in it so ejection gasses can get through it to deploy the chute. I dont plan on launching this on anything bigger then a G80 so I tryed to not overdue things, like long SC, or extra strong cord attachment, long MM ect. But I do think I should have made the SC a few feet longer, but I just cut the chunk I had in half... cause i'm cheap ;)
So below are pics of my fins going on, the sc mounts all made & epoxied up, the kevlar coard attached to on end & a pic of how things are looking on it right now, next is finishing the MM & getting it installed.
Picture 3897.jpgPicture 3909.jpg Picture 3907.jpgPicture 3910.jpgPicture 3923.jpgPicture 3919.jpg
Oh ya I used Krylon paint & clear for nose cone on strange clouds

Looking good! Your really giving qquake2k a run for his money at the rate your cranking out those builds!!:p

lol is that a good thing? I know i've seen that name before, but I cant, think of where....I'm guessing the high power forum.
I'm not trying to "crank them out" I am trying to make quility builds, thing is though I do this in spare time, waiting for snow(i remove snow)& since it has not snowed much here, so I got lots of time lately. I know you guys(rocketgeek & nute) both got a few rockets of your own on the go, I saw a good sized list Nute got for christmas I believe. Cant wait to see you guys builds.

I made more progress on my 2nd scratch build(name is still undecided) I got my SC attachment plate glued in, I hope it works as good as I want(ie: never break & allow gasses through properly) I taped up the SC leader so i didnt get glue on it.
Picture 3932.jpgPicture 3933.jpg

I got my motor mount glued in, now just to decide on a name & paint colours.
Picture 3934.jpgPicture 3943.jpg

good ol hand sanding,(see sandpaper in second pic) first I shape them with 100grit then I smooth them with 220, sometimes I'm not sick of sanding & I do a quick once over with 600grit. I start by holding the sandpaper at a 45ish degree angle then widen/flan it out, sofar I've made the leading edge a bigger bevel then other edges & will prob continue to do it that way.
