Yes, I know it's an obsession bordering on a sickness. Yes, I know I've got it bad. Yes, I know I'll have to stop building them sooner or later. But not yet...

I've been building an upscale Goony Patriot, based on LOC 3.1" tubing. I could have bought a fiberglass elliptical nose cone for $25, but my good friend Carl convinced me to try turning one. For $20, I got a chunk of 4x4x12 basswood from Woodcraft. I used half of it to turn the elliptical nose cone, which turned out quite nice. So today I decided to turn the other half, and ended up with a short "goony like" ogive. It also turned out quite nice, if I do say so myself. Well, obviously I needed to build something for the ogive cone. I still have a length of the 3.1 tubing left, so I decided to make a goony Alpha III.

I decided on 1/4" plywood fins because they're overkill, and I always over build. But in my defense, they will be less likely to break if there's a rough landing.

Got the fins cut out and match sanded. I cut the centering rings out of 1/8" plywood, but one separated. Never had that happen before.

I can't believe you waited so long to find a use for that cone!

So I made new centering rings out of some 3/16" plywood I have, that's not quite straight enough for fins, but good for centering rings. I also epoxied the tee-nut and rail button blocks on the rings, and cut the body tube to 15".

I will not believe if you said you don't build another one.

I figure you guys have to get tired of my builds eventually. But until you do, I'll keep posting them.

GO JIM GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Nice work on those nosecones.Mybe someday I'll get more man toys to try my own cones. They really are a piece of art.You need to build a rocket and just put a clear finish on those cones.

LOL nice you must be retired? If i'm building a rocket it means something else is not getting done and i'm about to get the nag from the wife. So I will have to live vicariously through you so build on and keep posting I enjoy seeing what you will come up with next.

Uhh, yeah, us get tired of Build Threads?.... Not happening! Looking good so far, and I'm enjoying the Thread. Keep up the good work!

I wouldn't believe me either. LOL

It really did seem a shame to paint over that pretty grain. But then, the paint turned out so good, it looks awesome too.

No, not retired, but not married, either. That alone frees up a lot of my time.

So are we enabling you... or are you enabling us:confused:

I think we enable and encourage each other. I know I wouldn't be Level 1 or Level 2, if it wasn't for you guys.

I try and post lots of pictures. I know everyone here, including me, loves pictures.

Speaking of pictures, here are some more. According to Open Rocket, the weight of the eyebolt and an ounce of resin will make it stable. I also got the rail button blocks sanded flush, and the tee-nut holes drilled out.

Goto the tee-nuts pounded in and epoxied, the eyebolt installed, and the forward centering ring epoxied onto the motor tube.

You also must have an endless supply of parts on hand, or the tube manufacture and hardware store is in walking distance from your house. :)

I've decided to reshape the fins a bit, to give it a more "goonyish" (at least in my eyes) appearance.

I don't know capt, I'd say you need to take a break but I suspect you'd just take the time to build another rocket.

Very cool little design here.

Got the new fins cut out. Sure is a big difference in shape. I think I'm going to like the new ones a lot better.

Nice nose cone. I need to learn that skill. How long did it take?

Yeah, I have some parts, but it's certainly not an endless supply. I had this piece of 3.1" body tube, but no nose cone for it. I can't remember why I bought it.

You're probably right.

Probably 2-1/2 hours all together.

I really like the shape of these fins. They make the rocket look fatter. But now I have a dilemma. My son thinks, and I'm starting to agree, that it would be a shame to cover up the pretty grain in the nose cone. He thinks I should stain and varnish the wood. Now that would certainly be different. But if I do that, what color stain? Something dark like walnut, or light like oak? Or a colored stain that would still let the grain show through? And what color for the body tube? I thought about a fake wood wrap, but that would look tacky. Then I thought about metallic blue for the body tube, red stain and gloss varnish on the fins and nose cone, and a flame wrap for the top of the body tube. I just don't know.

Ari is right. You are about to exceed the number of launches available versus the number of new rockets to launch and thereby wrap around to the next year's launches falling further and further behind.

So I propose an Adopt a Captain Low 'n Slow Rocket Program (AACLSRP) whereby all your old rockets, with one or two flights are sent to deserving homes where they will be cherished and launched. I can see the commercials now... late night... sad rockets... sitting it the corner gathering dust... sad music in the background... an 800 number at the bottom of the screen...
:lol::lol::lol::lol: :eyeroll: :rofl:

Oh... Nice work BTW! :handshake: :handshake:
