Quest C6-5 motor casing temperature higher than Estes C6-5?

Here is why:

First flight of a Quest C6-5 in the Estes Standard to D engine adapter. I haven't experienced any deformation with Estes engines.

Yep... I used a Quest in an estes farside. It melted the fin tang so badly thet the rocket shredded... yes, I managed to shred a rocket on a c6-5.

Yup, the newer Quest C6's definitely get hotter than the Estes versions. They burn longer and have thinner cases. They really don't like plastic motor mount parts!

The Quest motor casings are hotter than the Estes casings however they are still below the 200C limit as defined by NFPA 1125 so they are within the certification specs.

The adapter now has that nice "hourglass figure", pretty hot! Literally!

Derek,

This is it exactly. Longer burn and thinner cases. I can't imagine anything that normally flies on a 24mm motor that would be light enough to go well on a Quest C6. What was it?

SEMROC Hornet. Nice flight!

I build many of the BT50 size rockets without the 18mm motor tube. I use the Estes adapter to fly them with 18mm motors. Now I will stick to Estes motors with the adapters. Many of the BT50 kits fly great on 24mm motors (if you have a large launch field!)

That's why they say to only launch Estes products with Estes motors.....

No 24mm here...both the Quest and Estes C6's are 18mm.

I have one Estes RTF in the fleet (my son found it near his appt. and gave it to me). It uses internal plastic parts and a twist lock retainer. The Quest C6 welded itself in! Many of Quest motor are browned after they fly.

Also...some rockets that I have fly great on the Estes C6 motors but not on the Quest. The Odd'l Wedgie is one that comes to mind.

I know that!

Derek's original post shows a damaged Estes 24-to-18mm adapter that was cooked by the Quest C6. Hence the question.

The Hornet makes perfect sense and would go well on a Quest C6.

Which, of course, YOU do :D.

Yep... they sure do. The casings are MUCH thinner and with the longer burn times of the Quest motors, I've had the Quest C's come back with the casing COMPLETELY carmelized-- IOW the white wrapper sticker on the outside of the casing got SO hot that it turned COMPLETELY BROWN. The casing was spongy so I split it open with my pocketknife-- it was VERY VERY CLOSE to being burned through... the motor also got SO hot that it melted the plastic engine retainer lock ring on the bottom of the Estes Metallizer that was holding the motor in the rocket, basically WELDING the ring to the motor... had to wait until it cooled thoroughly and then gave it a SHARP rap on the table to dislodge the motor without splitting the locking ring...

I subsequently had three of my rockets crash using Quest motors after prepping them like I would for Estes motors... folks gripe about the Estes "shotgun ejections" but I can tell you, watching your rocket streamline in because of Quest "Flea fart" ejections is worse... sometimes the nosecone popped loose, but not enough "oomf" to shove out the laundry...

I've got a bunch of Quest motors I bought, but basically I'll only fly them in "junk" rockets because I don't want to risk my "good" models...

Later! OL JR :)

My bad...

It is quite nice! (The Sod Farm launch site, that is) The FlisKits Thing-a-ma-jig really rips on a D12-7!

I've used the Estes Standard Adapter with a AT SU D10 and it worked great. I'll save the Quest motors for the 18mm light rockets. I have plenty of those:D

A D-12 series flown motor, with the nozzle cleaned out, makes a perfect adapter for 18- 24mm motor mounts.

18mm motors will slide right in. [sometimes that lip on edge from cutting machine needs sanding off]

I've never used it for quest motors, but think that extra paper insulation might keep from melting stuff.
