Someone's going through the DT's!!
I had my winter fix for now.
ESL 140 was good. Nice weather for Jan. A little breeze but I'll take the 45deg. over the 25deg. any day.
Great turn out for the launch too.
The Feb. launch maybe in the mix.

Less than 3 months away and I've got the fingers crossed for good weather.
Besides my Buttercup (http://www.davdi.com/buttercup.php), I've got 2 other projects in the works and will hopefully have their maiden flights at RG8.
The first is Black 5, the half scale. Actually it will be a .478 scale, but close enough. It will be 6' 9" tall with 5.5" diameter replica of my ill-fated fullscale that showered the earth with smoking chunks at LDRS. Progress will be detailed here: http://www.davdi.com/Black5_Half_Scale.html
My second and even more ambitious project is Scarto. Ken Allen just shipped the parts (just got off the phone with him) and will hopefully get started next week. It will be a 7.5 diameter ~15 foot tall rocket with a unique fin design. Hopefully it will fly straight. Depending on the final weight, the motor will be full M or a baby N. Progress for this will be detailed here: http://www.davdi.com/Scarto.html

Arrgg... due to the snow I had a few days off to work on rockets (when not shoveling snow) and I made some headway on Scarto (http://www.davdi.com/Scarto.html). After some intense measuring and aligning, I got it just right and epoxied the first fin in place. Not much epoxy, just enough to hold it until I can get the other fins in the right place. Well, had some friends over tonight and one of the kids knocked it over knocked the fin right off. :bangpan:
Now I have to start all over.

FYI, Only a couple of more days to save money by preregistering. On the 12th, the preregistering will stop at the discounted rate. After that it will be the full rate at the field.
Psssst... the raffle tickets are half off if you preregister. I shouldn't have said that because I bought 10 bucks worth, and now you are probably going to buy 20 bucks worth and win that super hot kit that I should have won.

WANTED: 2 6000ns cases to borrow. Do you have a Loki or AMW 6000 case that you won't be using the weekend of Red Glare? We're trying to get a cluster flight together and are looking to borrow. We don't need full motors, just cases -- we have all the internals. We're running a blue EX load in it that has been very proven and flown 3 times in this exact configuration. Obviously, if something happens, your case will be replaced. PM me if you can help out.

I'm looking for about 6" of PML 7.5" Body tube. (actually I just need a section about 8" long) - it's for a repair job and I don't really want to buy a whole 48" piece. Alternatively I would consider buying a 24" long section from someone.
Also - I have a shiny brandy new AT 75-6400 case that I would like to barter for a 5120. So if you are looking to get the 6400 new at the launch and want to save around $30, let me know.

YES
Was that yes on #1, yes on #2 or yes on both?
I realize #1 (a motor CATO) will cause #2, but #2 won't cause #1.
( I don't consider a structural failure a CATO, but there have been some "misinformed" folks that refer to one that way).

I want to see the video!
Heller built a 3 grain O4700 he wanted to fly. So he called me at 8:30 last night and asked me to prep it. I got my act together and got it mostly done. Got there around 11:00 today, worked untill 3:30 and got it on the pad. Lit the candle and it was SCREAMING off the pad, 1k feet up or so and it let go. Parts were everywhere. The fins, chutes, nosecone, and electronics were all that was good. He did get the nozzle/carrier and case back but it needs to be cut down.

I read then that it WAS someone elses motor (not sure whose motor case it was - or whose rocket either).

Well, and I hate to say this, Red Glare rekindled my rocket fire. Im really trying to get rid of crap though. I mean I dont need 10 38-240 cases. Im not going to get out but I need to scale back at this point.

How messed up is that? It was all good. Maggie saved the family honor on Friday. I had a great flight Sat in spite of the wind (and the fact that my rocket was neked). Now I just have to get some paint on the Bull Pup. If it wasn't for my failed attempt Friday, we wouldn't have gone back Saturday. Then I'd have missed Bens Spectacular CATO. Tough break Ben, Looked as if you had the makings of an awsome flight. Maggie won one of the raffle prizes Saturday. A single use AT 29mm Redline G. She won a reload case last RG. Think I'll take her to Vegas. Lots of Certs this weekend; L1, L2 and L3. I was impressed by the fact that most everyone was able to adjust quite well to the heave wind conditions. Shazaaammmm........ If you blinked you missed it. That fast.
My R-das reported 11458ft.....65G's... 1208ft/sec Mach 1. something....2560lbls of thrust for..... .995 seconds. Straight as an arrow.
All in a 68 lb, 13ft , 6inch, Ultimate Ultimate glass Endeavor. This thing has 14-M flights.....3 -N flights and THIS flight N-10,000 the only time I ever did this and was actually a scared. Between the 4 of us before the race we secretly decided that anyone's rocket that survived was the winner!
Board was epoxied on with 4 stainless golf club shafts and carbon fiber.
One side of board completely pulled off of rods[ ply wood de-lam from accel.]
And 1 centering ring knocked loose and back 2inches from acceleration.
There was no motor roar at ignition, just a shotgun blast from 4 motors.
It wasn't a launch..... it was artillery.
If you got a Pic/Video please post it. John Clifton did blink and actually missed the launch. His was the unpainted Wildman Ultimate built the day before. It wouldn't be a Wildman drag race if at least 1 rocket wasn't built in haste. The bay and retainer were put on minutes before the race.
For the first time ever, after the adrenaline subsided, Cannot think of what to do to top this!:confused2::confused2::confused2:

First off thanks to the folks at CTI [ Jereon/Anthony] and Wildman[ Tim Lehr] for sponsoring this first of the seasons many "Traveling flying circus roadshow" Drag races and the fine folks at MDRA especially Neil and Bob for putting on such a fine event and allowing us the privilege of flying with them.
There WILL be many more events...all in secret planning for now. WE can't wait to come to your event and promote more rocket chaos and mayhem.
Second the rockets....All that survived were Wildman products. Remember this next time you are thinking about buying and building a L-3 kit. These things can take whatever you throw at them. We just proved it!
Third the igniters.. No not thermite, but just as fast if not faster!.....sorry we can't tell you what they are. If you were there, you know how bada$$ they are. A Wildman drag race exclusive that will NEVER be shared, unless you are in the race.
Fourth, raking the pad area in prep for the race. WE don't want no stink'n fires. Thanks guys.

THe fliers:
John Clifton with his less than 24hr old Ultimate Wildman. He blinked and missed the lift off.
Mike DeVenti who shredded his Nike before it went 25 ft. Tim gave him lifetime membership as a Wildman for his showmanship and "just fly it" attitude. Definitely responsible for MAJOR chaos and mayhem. GOOD show Mikeeee the crowd loved it.
The sponsor and instigator of this one, the Wildman [Tim Lehr]himself and his well abused Ultimate Wildman.
And finally me Crazy Jim with the Wildman glass Ultimate Ultimate Endeavor [THE TIGER TERROR] and first off the pad

Lol thanks, it was a fun effort to fly Todd Harison (tharrison)'s "Shake Weight" rocket (named for the nose weight system we put inside, I swear). Him and Ryan Sebastian (Ryan S.) did the motors, I was just on igniters, rail buttons, nose weight, and mediation duty. Oh, and we put Darren's name on the flight card since we finished the rocket in his basement the night before, and he had no idea what a Shake Weight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S3C4AC908w) was before we informed him.
The motors were two M2000 and two K800 SuperBlues. They picked up that 85 lb rocket at 11 gees. Not bad.

Hey, congrats on your re-L1 flight, too! That thing booked, did you find it successfully?

Yup. It was over in the plowed field. I think I'm going to "Wildman" this thing out and dual deploy it. It'll be fun on a 29mm I.

Troy I apologive for not finding you on Saturday, I was prepping my @ss off to get this thing up. I have your 29mm Casting tubes still. Congrats on the flight, I heard your name and watched the flight but never found you.

Don't sweat it, we'll hook up at some point. Sorry about the KABOOM. Looked like there was enough of the upper portion to build another booster. Good luck.

What did your rocket look like, and what motor? I may have gotten a picture of it.
It was a 3" scratch Bull Pup. White primer tube and nose, raw ply fins and translucent glass boat tail. Congrats on your Cert. Seems there were a lot of Cert flights this weekend. Good for all of us.

Here's the Queen of my skys. Shot this just before Maggie went up for her L1 (just in case;) ). I think she did a great job for her first HP build. She made her Cert flight on an H123 and had a second flight on an H73. Last flight had a minor zipper. Only had to trim about 2" off and she was back in buisiness. She wanted to fly it Saturday but the wind made her nervous. She'll probably get an EXL kit for it to add dual deployment.

Looked like there was a nose cone (was it a commercial nose cone?) and upper airframe in the photo...where did they end up?

Buried in the dirt about 20 feet in front of the SUV I was standing next to. Not cool.
Dudes, O motors are not the place you should be characterizing your propellant's burn rate parameters or physical properties. Blowing up two 6" motors in as many months has got to be expensive, and not exactly something I'd call "fun".

Hey, I blew mine up due to case failure and thats why I put mine in the ground. The grooves were cut too deep and uneven. Learned my lesson about using a local mahine shop :/
Steve Heller made this O motor. You can talk to him about the propellant. It was rooted to casting tube bonding issues. But it was ALOT of motor for the case too.

I caught a few photos of it. http://our.rocketryplanet.com/photo/albums/red-glare-8-4172010
He said it will probably/maybe fly along side another 1/10 scale model at a dedicated launch later this year. Should be fun.

OK Dick,,
That's just scary,,, one of two things happened,, either you stole the CF card from my camera,, or you saw the 1B through my eyes,, your pics are just about,,, if not identical to mine. I assume the one pic was of the fold out fin,,, right?

I'm not sure what you mean by fold out fin as I didn't talk to anyone about the details about his design. He was swamped by fans/inquisitors when I swung by.
If I had stolen anything from ya' it woulda had fins on it ;)

Pic 8007. see the blk and white panals (LS of pic) w/the the circles on them. They flip out for the 2nd stage. Actuated by a CO2 valve. Relay computor controlled, software written by Tom's friend. Sure there will be more details provided when finished.

Exactly,,, Steve is going big again,, gyros and micro processors will make sure;
booster has seperated,
fins,, as mentioned by Ed, have deployed and locked,
rocket is still within (x) amount of degrees of verticle
then light the second stage.
This is the sequence as told to my by Steve.

Thanks guys for the description. It now rings a bell that I had heard about the flip out fins. This should be cool.
