I ordered up a Hawk Mountain Proteus last week, and now I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival. Does anyone on this forum have experience with this kit/rocket? I've really enjoyed HM's other birds, most especially the bombproof quality of the all-fiberglass construction.

I checked the Essence's Model Rocketry Reviews (EMRR) web site at https://www.rocketreviews.com/cgi-bin/arcbuild/arcbuild.cgi?ven061&&MfgList to see if there was a review on the Hawk Mountain Proteus. There is not. So, when you fly your Proteus, be sure to post a review at EMRR for others to see!

At the Hawk Mountain web site https://hawkmountain.blastzone.com , I can see that the rocket is HUGE and extremely well built:

Hawk Mountain PROTEUS Specifications:

Diameter: 6"
Length: 132" (11 feet)
Weight: 640 oz. (40 lbs)
Fins: 3
Fin Thickness: 0.1875"
Motor Mount: 98mm
Nosecone: Fiberglass
Parachute: Rocketman Pro Experimental
Shock Cord: Dual 3/4" KEVLAR® & 7.6mm Man-rated climbing rope
Heat Shield: Deployment Bag of KEVLAR® reinforced NOMEX®

That is one SWEET rocket! I dont have any of their kits, but I have ordered a number of their fiberglass components and they are all of the finest quality!

What motor do you plan to fly it on first? Maybe a nice and gentle M1315 or go all out with the N2000!:D then again it is light enough for an L1120 or L1500. that would be fun!

As I've not yet flown a Level Three bird, I'm restricted to boosting it on L's. I've currrently got an L1120 on hand that should do the trick; sims out to 4400 feet; fine for our relatively small field.

That sounds good! I love the L1120, GREAT motor!
I would love to buy a Proteus, if only I could afford that $1200 price tag! What electronics are you planning on using? Have fun, and be sure to take LOTS OF PICS!:D Otherwise we will be forced to sacrifice you to the rocket gods!:kill: But then I am sure Phil would want to sacrifice you to the cows.:kill: SO, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! TAKE MANY PICS!:D

Actually, I'm thinking of contacting my buddy Charlie Loveday, a Level Three TAP member, for the go-ahead to use the Proteus as my L3 bird. As I live on an island, this will require that I take LOTS of documenting photos. I'll see if I can get them posted to the Forum.

As to electronics, I've had consistent results with the PML Co-Pilot; I'm also itching to try out my new Magnetic Apogee Detector, probably as backup.

I also have an M1939 in my bag of tricks, but this combination will require a higher waiver (and a bigger/better field) than my club currently possesses.

Great choice.

I don't have any experience with that one, but I do own the Raptor. It is a 29mm minimum diameter rocket. It is practically indestructable. It fell from 2,500 feet on a tangled chute and hit a hard dirt road without a scratch. I just flew it this weekend at NSL on a G-64 to about 3,000 ft. Here's a pic.

I actually own two Raptors and I'm currently building a third; this one with dual deployment. Two years ago I launched one on an I200; fastest boost any of us had ever seen. We lost sight of it; I finally got it back 6 months ago from a farmer who found it a mile away and called me up asking if I had lost a rocket. Sure enough, there it was, 29/360 case and all. It'll have to be a mighty still day for me to fly that combo again.

Rocketman do you launch with Frontier? I have talked to Charlie Loveday and seen a few of his birds fly. I know he launches at CMASS too. If you launch the rocket at Frontier be sure to tell me so I can come down and check it out!

Yes I do launch at Frontier. I'll keep the Forum posted as to when the Proteus will fly; Alan of Hawk Mountain tends to be a bit on the slow side delivery-wise, so I still haven't recieved even the payload/electronics/nosecone portions yet. He did advise me that it'll take a while, so I can only hope to finish the build before the next Frontier launch on June 21st. That L1120 is burning a hole in my pocket...

Rocketman, you're not supposed to ignite the motor until it's in the rocket... :p

Awsome I was thinking of going to that launch anyway. I dont go to all the Frontier launch but I have started to try to go to them. I will definantly go to meet you and see the L!!

Mmmmm ... L motor. If I had a LEUP, and a rocket for it, I would bring a L777 White Wolf... but since I don't have either/or, I am out of luck :(.

Sadly, especially on this rainy day, I haven't received any of the parts for this rocket yet. I knew it would take Alan a while but... I must admit to a bit of frustration at this point. I'll start a new thread and post pix when it does arrive.

Cool, I was talking to doug and only fooling around
I didnt mean to be rude...sorry :kill:
I cant wait to see the building pics

For those of thinking of coming out to the Frontier launch to see the Proteus...don't bother. I STILL don't have all the pieces, just the motor and booster tubes and the nose cone. Five weeks now and counting... Makes me appreciate Ross at Magnum and Kevin at Countdown. And here I thought the ledgendary wait for kits from Dynacom were long.

Man, I hope you get your stuff soon...I was getting ready to order some 6" FG bodytube from Hawk, but may wait now.

Good luck and keep up the posts! ;)

Carl

Hey Carl, why don't you order it from Giant Leap, I am pretty sure that they keep it in stock at all times.

Roc,

I had looked at Giant Leap and chose them as an alternative, as their prices are just a bit higher. Hawk also offers BT in up to six foot lengths, which is what I want, while Giant Leap only offers 48" lengths. In the last few months I have ordered 48" sections of both 4" (MMT for the HARM) and 3" (98mm to 75mm MMT Adapter) BT from Hawk and have had good service, hence my reasoning for using them again.

Carl

Carl,

You need a 6 foot long 6" diameter tube! what are you building now? it better be two stage or clustered! or both!:D

Rocwizard...believe it or not...

...neither cluster nor two stage.

It's for my All G12 FiberGlass 2/3 Scale IQSY Tomahawk...I need a 6" x 72 " lower BT, 6" x 36" long upper BT, 3.9" x 60" MMT and 1/4" thick G10 Fins...it's gotta be stout. Moreover, the 60" long MMT will allow me to use the largest of Hybrids.

Here is the pic:

.25" G10 fins! ok, now you have gone too far, I hope you are planning to fly it on at least a full N! And that is the minimum!:D

Roc...actually .25" is scale in thickness, that is, after glassing. It will be my Hybrid Model, hence the need for the long MMT, but may see a N4800 sometime in the future if they are still around. It should be able to handle the stress of the largest motors.

Carl

N4800, ok I can work with that, just make sure to take LOT of pics like always!:D

That should fly very nicely on a hypertek MAX-M!
