Figured I'd start a dedicated "Estes" photo gallery.

Post your "Estes" rocket photos!
Any and all "Estes rockets" welcome!

(For a bit of 'self gratification', and to give insperation to others!)

2 of my Fat boy,
One of my "grey goose" Patriot,
And the old Aim-9 Sidewinder Kit (never flew too well. Retired after about 4 launches & 'pranged' constantly..)

Here are pics of my Canadian Arrow, modified into a "tank stretched extended range Kriegsmarine V-2". Near the end of World War II, Germany was working on launching rockets from submarines, even launching some small artillery type rockets from a surfaced submarine in the Baltic Sea. There were also plans to launch V-2's from submarines, but they were too big for the available submarines, so a plan was hatched to launch V-2's from submersible "cans" towed across the ocean behind the submarine. Near the US coastline, a chamber on the back end of the "can" would be flooded, causing the can to bob upright in the ocean, and the missile would be fuelled. Then it would be launched from the 'floating silo' and the can would be cut loose and the submarine would submerge for the trip home. The V-2's limited range required the submarines to have to penetrate too far into US coastal defense zones, and the submarine towing the can was horribly slow and inefficient, though some submersible cans were built and tested for seaworthiness.

Von Braun's rocket team had been working on increasing the thrust of the V-2 rocket motor, and had they had another year, along with better guidance and a logical tank stretch for increased range, this could have been a reality-- V-2 rockets landing on New York...

Yall have a good one! OL JR :)

and full disclosure: all these came from other sources (i.e. various places on the web), so if you don't feel comfortable with that, by all means delete them.

Since w're showing off.

Let's face it that's why we are here!

The first pic has one Centuri clone in it.

Then some classics.

The third pic was from NARAM 43 when this nice gentleman walked up to me and asked for my Trident.

Now the fourth pic was taken by...believe it or not Carl from SEMROC! Carl was the RSO for NARAM 43.

Well, seeing that the nice pic of Mary Roberts was with a large (1/45 scale IIRC) Saturn-IB Estes considered releasing that would have used up to G power (setting a precedent for a MPR bird in this thread), and Sandman’s photo of the “nice gentleman” with the Trident....i'm posting two pics I had held back from posting.

Myself with a 2X SkyDart at an “undisclosed location” in 2000 (when NARAM was in Canon City, CO).

And myself and that same “nice gentleman” from Sandman’s photo, last summer with my 4X Astron Spaceplane and his 1X Golden Astron Scout.

To show a current kit that is not a scale-up, a Baby Bertha I built. It is pretty much my current workhorse sport/demo 4-fins-and-a-nose-cone type rocket.

The last pic is a Big Bertha I built around 1980. A bit beat-up but still flyable, though the Baby Bertha has mostly taken over. In this pic, the Big Bertha was rigged to carry 4 styrofoam gliders up with it. Paint pattern is all-yellow with fluorescent red-orange added up front, fading away to yellow towards the back, and the same for the fins. The original red-orange nose cone was lost, you can see some scratches in the red-orange paint that shows the yellow under it, and there is a popped spiral seam from a failed ejection nose-first crash.

Here are some of mine that my parents gave to me when I was home at Christmas.

Alpha III about 1995 (maybe) with the other picture they gave me of my brothers and I after recovery, it was cold that day and likely my first rocket flight.
2044
Astrocam 110 launch, I have more successful pictures of this rocket in the air than ever came out
2045
Solar Sailer II under chute, last the chute about a year ago when the 10ish year old tape spots gave way on deployment, and I can't decide if I want to rebuild the engine mount.
2046
V2 launch, the parachute wadded this flight and my youngest brother got under it and caught it like a football, only damaged was a broken fin. Lost the nose cone to shock cord failure in Nov 2008, found a Canadian Arrow kit to replace the cone and increase my spare part supply
2047
My 1st Mean Machine's only flight. It was a little windy that day and the pad wasn't staked down as good as it should have been. A gust caught it as I pushed the button and it took off at a safety code violating angle and traveled about 200 yards horizontally before ejection at about 15 feet in the air. Lesson always stake the pad down well and say no when it is windy.

If memory serves you had a thread on this build before TRF went toes up.
Where did you get the decal or would you be willing to share the file?

The first picture is my entire model rocket collection circa April 1972.

The second contains (L-R): WAC Corporal, Citation Patriot, Ranger, A-20 Demon & Arcas.

Next, an original Scissor-Wing Transport.

Fourth, one of many launches for my Maxi-Alpha 3.

Lastly, my well-worn Orbital Transport.

Sure... Yes I did a build thread on it... It's probably still over at YORF or RP since I generally crosspost :)

I did the decal myself-- after looking at dozens of U-boat insignia and not finding anything I liked (pigs are featured quite a bit, probably for luck, along with umbrellas [probably a U-boat joke] and donkeys and elephants and a mule kicking Churchill) I just made my own 'U-boat flavored' design drawn on paper, scanned in, sized down to where I liked it, and printed out on regular paper, cut out, and glued on. Works like champ!

I'd be happy to share the file...

Later! OL JR :)

My arsenal. All Estes except the Nike Hercules in the center. That one is from Sandman and the one that got me back into rocketry. Oh yeah, and the Saturn 1B is Semroc's. The Saturn V, the Cherokee D, the Skyraider and the Klingon Battle Cruiser are all about 30 years old (recently restored).

Hey Bob, is Fred part of your collection too?
By the way, when was that photo taken?
Is that at Mile Square Park?

I'll dive in from the few in our tiny but growing fleet.

First up is my Crossfire ISX which I renamed the Crossfire Cub since it's painted in Cub Scout colors and I try to fly it whenever we have scouts around.

22662267

Next is my Estes Amazon that came in the same starter package. this thing is a workhorse and has been just about flown to death since a) the kids discovered that they could load small "paratroopers" in with the parachute and b) I can fly it even on windy days without it going too high or too far downrange.

2268

Finally we have a shot of our Estes Skywriters (mine's a little bigger):D

Ever list them anywhere we can look up?

Hey Scott, you know what would be cool (and funny), to see you do a "re-make" of that photo with your current fleet and you (today) with a similar pose in the center.:D

I have many of them left... How about you choose a few of them and I'll pose with the remains?:D

No, Fred is not part of my collection. He would take up too much storage space. :D

The Maxi-Alpha 3 liftoff picture was taken in the Spring of 1989, just before I went back to work for AeroTech.

Yes, that is the much missed Mile Square Park launch site. :(

This is my original K-29 kit I've been working on since the beginning of our
Christmas Break 2008; only major difference from the kit is I'm using Apogee
Apollo Capsule and added more external details missing from the original
(mainly on the SIV-B and Service Module). Plus, I've included card stock H1
nozzles for display. Took this picture last night; all I have left to do is the
decals and the shock cord attachments (the recovery set up is similar to the
Centuri 1/100 scale Saturn 1-B).

Ok, well, I'll just post my most recent Estes build. It will fly as soon as the snow is melted...

Well, OK - most of them don't have paint yet, so they aren't much to look at. It is a good thing that you allow clones, too. I don't have the kind of money that would enable me to go bid for vintage kits on eBay, so cloning is all I can do. There are a few actual Estes products in the following pictures; I also have several Estes kits that I haven't built yet. All the rest are clones. I will need a few posts to show them all.

The 3 in the first pic are: an Estes Alpha, a No. 2 Estes Sky Writer and an Estes Wizard.

The second picture shows three Midgets: an upscale, a K-40 clone, and a Midget Mini-Brute clone.

The next three pics are of an Astron Mark clone, an Astron Scout clone and an Astron Sprite clone.

More clones.

First pic: two cloned Birdies (red: 18mm, green: Mini-Brute)

Second pic: a couple of DOMs - a Lil' Augie and a Top Secret

Third pic: EAC Firecat clone

Fourth pic: Goblin clone (actually painted!)

Fifth pic: Maxi Alpha clone.

One more - my Mini Marz Lander, the only RTF that I own.

I also have a Gauchito and a Lucky Seven that are built, but both are so badly damaged from flight mishaps that they aren't worth showing right now.

Plenty more Estes clones are either planned or are already in the works.

A couple more pics that I forgot to post.

(Remember, you requested all of this. )

Pic #1: Mini-Brute clones (Mosquito, Screamer, Mini-Bertha).

Pic #2: More Mini-Brute mania - Rogue, Hornet, and Aero-Hi clones.

Hey Tim-
Nah, the last 3 times I've gone to Lucerne for a Feb./Mar. launch, it's been a waste of my time. I usually end up sitting in the car waiting for the winds to die down, and of course they never do (not to mention the cold).

I'll wait until we hit the Spring/Summer months.

Anyway, now having said that, I'm sure you guys are going to have a great, warm, calm launch day - so you're welcome!

I'll see you guys on May 31st.

Well then you should go in disguise that way the winds won't recognize you.

A-ha! You have a Starlight - one of my all-time favorite designs! It has been on my "to be cloned" list ever since I resumed flying, and I have had the parts for almost as long. So why haven't I built it yet? Well... all I can say is, sometimes the "desire" is more fun than the "fulfillment." ;) :D

In the active fleet I can claim:

Invader: an almost ready to fly saucer
Micron: A 4FNC
Red Alert: used for a parachute competition
Shuttle XPress: which now performs much better since the parasites are gone
Trade Federation Droid Fighter: Mostly fights with the ground...and loses

JAL3
19th February 2009, 05:17 AM
and:

Snitch: the kids love it on an AT
Rubicon: flies well but can't hold onto its fins
Naboo Royal Starship: awaiting repairs after a catastrophic maiden flight
Maxi Honest John: Great on an F12 reload
GeoSat LV: a nice one

JAL3
19th February 2009, 05:25 AM
and:

EAC Viper: another nice one
Lucky Seven: has a fear of heights

IN the works is:

Cosmos Mariner

The RIP Squadron had:

Dragonite: Gave up the ghost
220 Swift: first rocket launched as a BAR...a 1/4A3-3 never seen again

JAL3
19th February 2009, 05:33 AM
Nire dead uns:

X-15 RTF: mine flew well but was eventually lost
Y Wing Starfighter: had 3 great flights and then augered in unstable
Red Squadron X-Wing Fighter: a chronic underachiever until lost
Mean Machine: lost to a security fence
CC Express: worked fine as a single stage but core sampled when the sustainer did not ignite

And then there are the ones still to build...:D

The third pic was from NARAM 43 when this nice gentleman walked up to me and asked for my Trident.

Funny. I was watching while this picture was taken. I walked back and told my brother in law who I'd just seen and he thought I was crazy.

Now the fourth pic was taken by...believe it or not Carl from SEMROC! Carl was the RSO for NARAM 43.

So, good chance Carl checked out at least one of my rockets. They all got to fly, so maybe he's not as smart as I gave him credit for being. ;)
That was an entertaining weekend. I've wondered how many people I talked to at Geneseo that I eventually got to know on here. At the time the names were coming fast and furious, and I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole NARAM experience, so I draw a blank on most of them. I do remember meeting JimZ (and his sidekick with the Mr. Kotter mustache;),) and Tango Papa. Never had the nerve to approach Vern.

Here are a few of our Estes Kits. All of the rockets from my original rocket days are Estes. During the mid to late 80's, they were about the only game in town. The last one is my 2.6" upscale Bertha; unfortunately, that is the same one in my avatar. However, the damage was minor - merely a flesh wound.
