ACME spitfire clone?

i would like to do a cardstock ACME spitfire and was wondering if it would be ok to do one using the "free stuff" templates instead of buying one. would it be appropriate or would it not be nice. in short, would it offend jim? thanks in advance,

Generally speaking, if it's a model currently being produced and you don't have the copyright permission or access, um yeah, you could get in BIG trouble, especially if you publicly or otherwise make the clone templates available.
Myself and other card modelers in the past have also caught people putting our 'FREE' designs on a disk, and then trying to sell it. E-BAY will do nothng about copyrights violations. That has happened in the past, and it's not nice.
Now, personaly, I don't chase down copyright violators of my work since I have sold all the copyrights to whats out there, or it was and is all free, it's just not worth it. If someone wants to fork over their money to a person who wants it more than me, for a model that's free? Well, it just sucks to be them, while I get a sadistic laugh.
Now, I can live without someone asking my permission to do a re-draw/rescale of a model I have done. However, the one thing I get 'IRKED' about is when someone re-scales or re-draws something I or anyone else has done, and doesn't give any type of credit to the original designer. Me or other. That's really "BAD FORM"!
It's also a bit irritating when someone changes one of my designs, either in scaling, use of materials, or whatever, and that persons model goes haywire and then "I" get a nasty-gram about it. YES, IT HAS ALL HAPPENED! More than once unfortunately.

There's a lot "wrong" with this idea :)

First, if you were to build an ACME Spitfire look alike using these as a card stock body it most likely wouldn't be sturdy enough and, if it was, it still wouldn't be stable.

Next ,those aren't "template" rather they are skins designed to cover the body tubes of the kit.

Third, frankly, the kit really isn't all that expensive and sales of our kits is what keeps FlisKits in business bringing you these way kewl designs :)

i figured that out after i posted this but i figured i could roll a tube and use the skins as templates to make it work

no its not expensive at all considering how awesome it is, but i dont have the money. im 15 and only have a summer job working for my dad and thats all going toward a truck this year.

I know how you feel! Not having money for rockets sucks. I decided that kits were way too expensive, so I decided to do only scratch builds.

Check put this thread. http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?t=33869 I think he still has plenty of BT-55 tubes, perfect for 18mm rockets. I got a whole bunch of them at a really good deal.
Card stock model conversions are great too.

Also, no, I am no offended. In fact I'm flattered that you like the design so much that you really want to have one so badly.

My suggestion is to set a goal based on how much money you can sock away each week till you have enough to get this thing.

Seriously, I have the ACME Spitfire and it is a great kit. You really do need the kit as this is not your average three fins and a nose cone rocket. And you can tell that Jim puts a tremendous amount of work into his unusual kits to get them to fly well. My Spitfire goes up nice and straight; which is hard to believe when you see it sitting on the pad ready for launching.

As you can see from his response, Jim is a really good guy. Just remember, never, ever, feed him after midnight!

There are plenty of free paper models out there which convert very nicely to low power, but you need to have done a few successful scratch-builds first so that you know where the strength needs to be and what you need to modify.
Fins, for example, need to be a lot stiffer and tougher than in a display model.
