post some pics of your rockets taking off!
here are a couple of favorites: (please credit the photos if you didn't take them!)
first one is my avatar, it's the one that started it all, the first "big" project between myself and my dad (aslo first rocksim attempt) It's an upscaled big bertha (or a regular sized broadsword?) that was scratch built and flown at my school in 6th grade on an estes E9-4. This rocket was destroyed in a non-flight related accident, but flew several times and that E9-4 was an absolutely perfect delay for that rocket. Great slow liftoffs and nice and easy recoveries! Thinking we should build another.
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm246/bigb1011/photo007.jpg
Second is my "Kiss my darkstar" for it's first and successful flight on an AT H123 that was 13 years old! This flight was my second and successful dual deploy flight, this confirmed that both alitmeters for my dad's L2 were functioning properly, and we were set to fly!(photo credit S. Collins)
second and third are the pictures of my darkstar getting smoked in an H999 drag race, but I still love the fact that you can see the mach diamonds so perfectly. (photo credit S.collins)
and here is a gif of my crayons taking off that were spliced from several pictures taken by (mystery camera man) he was at our launch one day taking pictures and nobody knew his name, but everyone talked to him.
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm246/bigb1011/crayon.gif
fifth is my mad cow mozzie on a Kosdon G40 slow just before it's demise...
and finally, I'll add a picture of my dad's rocket just because it's a cool picture. This was his L1 rocket, a slightly modified Aerotech Strong Arm on an Aerotech H97, that is the perfect motor for that rocket, it tares off the pad and climbs to about 3500 feet.(photo credit S. Collins)

The third time my daughters and I launched rockets, the first time we had gone for an evening to launch several. I had tried to get a good liftoff shot of every launch we had done with no luck. My then 6 year old daughter (eight this coming weekend) begged me to let her take a picture during the launch of my Baby Bertha. This is what we got.

It's not the FPS but the lag between when you push the button and when it takes the snap!
Mine were done on a D40 with a single frame. Its all about timing!

A DSLR camera is much preferred for this type of photography. However, if you have a point n shoot with a good high speed burst mode, you can get some nice shots with it. These were taken with my older Panasonic FZ35.

That'll do donkey, that'll do. (sorry obligatory shrek quote)
Just remember to use jpg and not RAW for high fps shots. At least that is what I learned on the nikon i have. Far too easy to fill the buffer with the RAW files. An even better idea is to RTFM for your camera and not learn the hard way like me.
Enjoy the new camera. They are very complementary hobbies.

To get high-quality lift-off shots, you have to spend big bucks for a serious camera. For me the threshold to Big Bucks Land is about $70. I do what I can with what I can afford.

Some of my favorites. [...]My scratch built Double Pumper on two D12-5's. Oh, I am such a sucker for cluster liftoff shots that clearly depict multiple jets. I could gaze that that picture all day. Is it me or do the individual jets show up much more easily in black powder clusters? In the composite cluster photos that I have seen they all tend to merge together into one big plume. The Skidmark photo is cool, but this is the one that I keep going back to. I just love seeing a gang of those thread-thin orange jets! :cyclops:
Even solo ones grab me when they are clear and blur-free. The exhaust jets in the color liftoff shots in my first Estes catalog (1967) did as much as anything to sell me on the hobby. (I didn't need much convincing, though.) In the months after I received the catalog, I showed those photos to everyone I knew, over and over again.
[...]First four photos taken by my nephew Wes.Please thank him for me! And thank you for posting that pic!

Last Sunday at the local HS football field. Taken by propping my Canon on a couple of Estes boxes and setting the self-timer and trying to time pushing the go button just right. This time it worked.Great idea; I hadn't thought of that. Here are some photos of my AAW Turbo Delta that I took for my review (http://www.rocketreviews.com/art-applewhite-rockets-turbo-delta-flying-saucer-18mm-4--by-mark-kulka.html) on EMRR. Like you, I was by myself when I was launching it one Saturday morning at the TLCS athletic fields in July 2007. I had the camera hanging by its strap from my wrist. As soon as I hit the launch button, I swung the camera up and aimed approximately where I thought the rocket was going. No time to frame the shot; I just snapped the shutter blindly. I got in maybe three shots per flight and I had no idea if I even caught any of the rocket at all. That one photo (2nd attachment) of the TD climbing high up in the sky was a completely blind shot - I just held the camera up, pressed the button and hoped that I got something. It was going nearly into the sun, so I couldn't even really tell where the rocket was when I snapped the shutter. I was incredibly lucky that morning; the Turbo Delta is only 4 inches wide by 2.75 inches tall!
This sequence was actually compiled from photos taken during the 5 flights that it made that day. That's my "Tribute to Rube Goldberg" launch pad in the first photo.

A few photos I took during NARCON 2010 in Worchester, MA. The launch took place at the end of the conference on 3/14/2010 at "Aunt Effie's field" (now a golf course) where Robert H. Goddard made his famous flight of the first-ever liquid fueled rocket that could lift itself on its own trust. The actual (approximate) location of that famous launch was a couple of hundred yards down the hill from this pad. It was the middle of March in eastern Massachusetts, about 40°F, with gusty winds and, off and on, a cold rain. The photos accurately capture the gloomy light at 2pm on a wet March day. Delightful launch weather! It was a truly memorable and moving event, though.
The first photo is of Bob Alway's Tazmanian Devil.
The second photo is of Will Marchant's cluster saucer.
The next three photos were the high point of the launch, and the reason we were all there.
Third photo: prepping the star of the show.
Fourth photo: Lift-off of Tony Vincent's build of the FlisKits Nell!
Fifth photo: Lift-off of Tony's FlisKits L-13.
After the flights, both of these models were presented to the Robert H. Goddard museum at Clark University, Worchester, MA.

:cool:You can see the heat waves roiling around the rocket. I've never seen that before.
At first I thought that the heat shimmer was from the blast deflector. They were too hot to touch just from the sun's heat. But ... I didn't see that shimmer on any of the other photos.
In the photo you can also see the igniter glowing and, to the right, a bunch of those bright little sprites we talked about in another thread. Click through to RocketReviews.com then again to the full-res photo for a better look.
The Mars Lander provided a neat series of photos. For other close-up launch photos, I've placed the camera on a tripod near the rocket and used a remote shutter release. This time I was just hand-holding the camera and standing back by the LCO table. I didn't expect to capture anything special.
Go back a couple of photos at RocketReviews.com and you can see the Mars Lander with the flame coming out of the motor while the igniter plug is still, mostly, in place. I think the mass and drag of the Lander caused it to accelerate a little slower than other rockets giving more time to take the photographs and a more dramatic lift-off.
BTW .. the rest of the flight was nice, too. Ejection was right at apogee and the rocket sat down in the grass gently, landing upright on its legs.

OK, people... who is going to post a pic of a glider soaring into the sky? Or one of a saucer or pyramid?
Ah ... a challenge! :-)
Here's one of Marc Slabbinck's saucer's on a sparky motor from a NEFAR launch a few years ago:
http://www.rocketreviews.com/image-marcs-saucer-400-600-13089.jpg
(http://www.rocketreviews.com//marcs-saucer.html)
Marc's saucers are always crowd-pleasers and, because they move so slow and create such dramatic flames and smoke, are great photography subjects!
Or a thrilling MicroMaxx lift-off pic? :confused2:
Hey, it's easy to get a dramatic shot of an HPR lift-off. How about a photo subject that is a little more challenging? ;) :p
MicroMaxx lift-offs aren't quite as dramatic, but they are much more difficult to catch. Heck, it's usually hard even to see a MicroMaxx rocket in flight, let alone get a photo of it.
So, that's why I was please with this shot I took of Chris Michielssen's Micro-Red Max: :-)
http://my.rocketreviews.com/image-2011-02-05-13-16-11-001jpg-600-600-21611.jpg
(http://my.rocketreviews.com/2011-02-05-13-16-11-001jpg.html)
And ... here's one with "no flame":
http://my.rocketreviews.com/image-2011-08-06-12-38-26-002jpg-600-600-13783.jpg

I think the Initiator was flying on an Aerotech F50 motor. It just "popped" off the pad. I wasn't sure I had a good photo of it until I checked later. I wasn't even sure I had seen the rocket leave the pad. It was there ... then ... 3 .. 2 .. 1 .. it was gone.

The rocket is Chris Michielssen's "Carded Downscale Red Max MMX (http://www.rocketreviews.com/hans-michielssens-red-max-downscale.html)." I think it's only about 3" tall. It's certainly not much longer than the motor casing that was used to hold the MicroMaxx launch rod.
The MicroMaxx launch rod adapter is pretty cool. It's made from a used motor casing, a launch lug, and a piece of piano wire. It slides over a standard 1/8" rod. I think it was invented by Jim Flis, but I first saw it when Brian Coyle used it at our ROCK launches. I'm always impressed by simple ideas like that which work well.
I had the camera very close to the launch pad for that photo. I have a remote shutter cable for the camera so I was able to stand a few feet back. You don't want to be too close to that mighty 1/8A motor when it roars to life!
Normally, I adjust the contrast of photos before I upload them. I'm not sure why I didn't do it for that one. It would look better if the rocket weren't so dark.

You do mean a fast shutter speed not ISO, right?
ISO is actually how sensitive the ( film ) is too light.

I caught a fellow woosh member's Wildchild on a CTI F240 VMAX. Burn time= .3 seconds, blink or no blink it was still next to impossible to follow with your eyes.
Only a fast ISO can catch these motors.

Here's some shots I got of some of the club guy's rockets at our Challenger 498 launch on 3/21/09. I don't end up flying a lot (some launches not at all) and usually end up doing the flight reports and take photos... These were all with my Fuji Finepix S2000HD, some set on burst mode (33 frames in less than 1.5 seconds). This is a really nice $200 "pro-sumer" upgrade camera from your regular P&S...

This is out at the Old Rocketeers #724 launch site at Needville, here on my farm. This launch was quite a while back; I was trying out my *then* new Fuji digicam... there's a "launch report" thread over in the "events" section. I usually end up doing more photography and keeping the notepads by the club launch controller handy for people to write down what they're flying (nothing really formal, we don't even have an RSO-- just ask everyone to put their name, rocket name, motor(s) designation, and maybe jot down a comment about the flight the next time they're "checking in" for their next flight... heck everybody even launches their own birds using the club controller (I bring my own usually-- that's just me) unless they ask someone else to launch it so they can do pics or go out for recovery...
Here's some links that'll help you out... You'll have to come on out and fly with us when we finally get some rain (and hopefully ditch the burn ban!)

Nice rocket and no disrespect intended, but you guys MUST have a death-wish launching SPARKIES with all that dry corn fodder on the ground and a field of dry standing corn right behind your pads...
Corn fires are NO JOKE. Aren't you supposed to clear the ground of ALL vegetation debris for at least 75 feet in all directions of the pad to launch sparkies?? At least have the farmer run a disk in a circle out there to disk the cornstalks and dry shucks under so any fire is far less likely to spread??
Don't know who your RSO is or who your landowner is, but honestly I think yall are LITERALLY playing with fire with that much combustible material on the ground and launching sparkies in the middle of it...
Look what happened in north Texas to see how fast a crop fire can lose a launch field...
Good luck! OL JR :)

I don't think anyone denies the fact the bean stubble will burn. I think the issue with your original post was that a blanket statement was made by you implying that the launch was not run safely, and that people had no respect for the safety of themselves and those around them. If you were not there, maybe you could have asked questions first instead of basing you comments on assumption. There was a fire crew with multiple people, multipule ATVs and a 500 gallon rig sitting at a safe distance ready to act. The corn in the picture was at least 1000' away. The picture was taken with a 300mm telephoto lens. We take our launches very seriously and safety is always our #1 concern. It bothers me when people such as yourself pass judgement on other people with out any facts what so ever.

Everyone is probably tired of seeing these but the shots just came out so well.
This is my Currell.net paper Friede from the 1929 Fritz Lang classic "Frau im Mond." The original file was printed at 300% on a 36" plotter, then the parts were cut out and glued to poster board. These were in turn cut out and assembled. Overall length is ~30 inches and her main body diameter is ~8".
Liftoff on an AT F40-4.

Later! :) ( smiley face added so as not to offend):eyeroll:
Doesn't the rules for sparky launches stipulate that the ground is to be cleared for a minumum 75 foot radius around the launch pads, REGARDLESS of whether there are "fire crews standing by" or regardless of the type or kind of ground cover?? Ok, I get it, the standing cornfield was quite a ways away. Yall had "fire crews standing by"... But that STILL doesn't obviate the necessity of following the rule regarding clearing the ground for a radius of 75 feet.
Ya know, out of respect for this thread, I'm not going to respond here anymore to this line of conversation. BUT it does highlight something that bothers ME... how one is NEVER allowed to question the judgment of the procedures used at a HPR launch, EVER! I asked a simple question, and instead I get attacked for it. SO be it... I've come to expect NOTHING ELSE from HPR folks... that's why I have NO INTEREST whatsoever in HPR and am only too happy that it isn't conducted within 65 miles of my property...
You have a great day.

Wow, that's a great looking bird! How big is it? Is it your own design?
Thanks! It is my own design made years ago. Its 30 inches tall. A BMS balsa BT-70 nose cone, a BT-70 payload section, a BMS balsa BT-70 to BT-60 transition, and 18 inches of BT-60 with a 24mm motor mount. Six trapezoidal fins. (I like lots of fins.) 3/16 (5mm) launch lugs on standoffs.
It's low and slow on a C11-3, nice demo flights on D12's, and starts to hit it's stride on D15s and E15s (as well as E28s or even E11-3s). I imaging F12s to be fun but have not yet flown it on those. That big nose cone/payload section likes to snap back and 'smile' so it needs lots of shock cord.

Yes with a LOC 2.1 to 3 or a 3 to 3.9 transition and custom nose cone (or just use a stock cone), it should work out nicely with 29 or 38mm MMT. Or of course with your skills, just turn your own transition.

The flyer attempted to launch a cluster with an Aerotech D10 and two A10 motors.
The launch illustrates the problem with mixing composite and black powder motors in a cluster.
The rocket landed on the ground not far from the pads then both of the small motors ejected. I don't think it was damaged.

Yep... I could see no good coming from those pictures! :y: :(
At best you need to hook up the BP motors separately and have a couple of feet of zip cord on the center motor so that it can light going up the rod. And that is just a hypothesis.
When clustering AP motors I do indeed like to take three or four feet of zipcord to the pad . Twist the zip cord to the ignitors of the motors and the other end is hooked up to the clips. Hypothesis being that it gives time for late ignition.
In this picture you can clearly see the zip cord in the smoke. Of course that is a bit of Apples and Oranges.
