Descent 1, 2, and 3 are one of my all time favorite shooters. I found that someone in Germany modified these games to play with today's Operating Systems... I have been playing D2 on my Windows 7 64-bit PC... well, to the business at hand...
I wanted to see how one of the missiles or bombs would do as a rocket. It looked like the Smart Bomb and the Mercury Missile are good candidates. Worked on a Rocksim version of the Smart bomb.... RS file and screen shots here.... kinda hard to balance. Based on a BT-80 and BT-100, ping pong balls for the "Plasma tanks", NC may have to be custom. It came out heavy and difficult to balance. The original design calls for 4-5 fins but I tried with 6 to bring the CP down... maybe someone can improve on this. Give it a shot and lets see where this one goes...
... the Merc Missile should be easier to do....

If you could build the back end of the first one lightly enough, it should work out OK--
Maybe if you 'cheated' and build that aft body as a flow-through ringfin it would be stable enough without adding a ton of nose weight
Plan B could be to add a clear plastic ringfin around the back end?

Holey guacamolle!
I asked this very quesiton about 2-4 years ago.. love Descent! am trying to get an old joy stick to work with my newer PC, and i had teh patch to play D3 on newer machines. Last time I tried, it was just a failure. (Descent was always a little finnikey to 'run' on any machine, I found..) pitty D3 kinda fell flat... MAze runnin on a large screen with hi resolution would make everyone sick!!
you got me looking for them missiles!
i once found an icon pack from Descent.. I had a Descent theme desktop!

Hey Doc Wogz, have you tried Descent 1 and 2 in DOS Box?
I haven't tried them personally, but I do play a lot of Wing Commander and TIE Fighter with a USB flight stick...and they work great
You are going to have much better luck making old software working on new hardware than getting that old joystick to work on new hardware

I worked on your suggestion of making the aft section a ring fin and it worked out OK... Made some fine adjustments to the BT and the NC also. Not a high flier. I do not like it as much as the one before but it is more stable.

I found a link to all the weapons from D2, but only small pics.

The Mercury Missile might be a better candidate for a build..

Dunno if the D3 version Smart bomb might be a little easier to model & build.. or the Frag missile..
The mega misisile looks funky, but doubtful them little fins woudl have any effect!
The last attempt to get D3 running was a few years a go. the joystick is a Cyber something.. USB. Only about 5 yrears old.. Works in Windows, but not with Descent.. I gotta spend a week-end just playing & plugging & reseraching patches & plug-ins & such. Most of my gaming has been WOW over the last few years! (Gawd, that sounds sad!!) and school.. Limits, derivitives, determinants, nth demensional planes & spaces anyone?!

Wow. This brings back memories. Way back in the mists of time I was a QA Tester at Interplay and I worked on most of the Descent series titles. Many a night was spent fragging people over the LAN. Good times. :)

I took some liberties with the configuration, and tweaked the tail ring up in size a little bit to make it more stable. I also tweaked the strakes to make them look a little cooler (I think). Based on a FatBoy nose cone and a short bit of BT80 at the front, a little over 11 inches of BT60, BT101 tail ring, and a MMT sized for 24mm C or D motors, I came up with:

I have some questions. Just one or two...
In the world of Descent, how big is this thing? Is it bigger/smaller than a breadbox? Hand launched/thrown? Launcher gear? Truck mounted?
Who uses it? Is there a name for their country/organization/army/force? Any emblems? Unit designation? Any corresponding markings-patches-emblems?
Does this weapon have any identified model number, manufacturer, etc? Any designation? Any service code?
How is this thing used? Does it go 'down the block' or across town? Across the country? Is it anti-personnel? Hard targets? Specific mission purpose or general purpose?
Any clues as to form(s) of guidance? Pre-programmed? Radar? Heat seeking? Maybe just plain 'dumb' unguided? Any reqmt for targeting data fed in to prepare for use?
I assume this is rocket propelled, but solid or liquid? Maybe gun launched ala 'rifle' grenades? Hand thrown? Dropped off a UAV?
Any info at all? Anybody?
