You can paint this high flying rocket like the package or create your own Go Wild design! The kit features the distinctive looking laser cut wood fins, a blow molded nose cone and easy to apply self-stick decals. This is now called a BS(bit shorter) Big Bertha after having to remove 2 1/2" after a lawn dart flight.
This has to be my favorite rocket to launch.

Pics of my scratch Bigger Bertha built for the Cesroni 6 grain 24mm white long burn. Glassed/epoxy 3/16th" balsa fins. BT Super glued saturated from the inside. The whole thing painted with Aeropoxy lay up resin from Giant Leap.

The other bird is a way cool kit from Advance Rocketry Group called Sky Probe. The probe is for testing some altimeters, and to get rid of the many smaller 29mm reloads I have. This model takes me back to Centuri Hustler days, but with a bit more punch. I think for the money this will be one of my favorite models. Foam resin nosecone and transition. Birch ply fins.

Back in the day the Big Bertha wasn't on my radar for some reason. Closest thing was a Scratch built Ranger 3 18mm motor cluster from the early 70's.
Later a Super Big Bertha entered the new fleet and was extended to hold 43 bail-out tiny parachutists for a club fun contest.

Even later a scratch built Big Bertha's set up to take 18 to 24 mm motor with a twist-lock motor mount and a light weight Fun Contest blue model rounded out the Standard size models.
Great size and fun flying rockets.

The theme of our club launch last Feb. was "Big Bertha Drag Race". Everyone bring out your BB's and line them up! Knowing I needed to build something not only kooky but also competitive, I came up with this:
The "Pig Bertha". Flies awesome on 24mm composites.

Here are a couple of our Bertha's. The one that the little rock star is holding is our first (and favorite) Bertha. It and a similarly painted baby Bertha are the first two rockets we always put into the air at a launch. The other is a heavy duty Super Bertha taking to the sky on an H-somthin'-or-other. That same flight suffered a bulk head failure (due to too much black powder in ejection charge) and resulted in my avatar picture. However, she is back in commission and better than ever.

Well, it may not be a Bertha - close though!

It's built from Quest parts and has a two engine cluster.
The paint is based on the 1969 Estes catalog picture.
It has flown well with B6-4s and C6-5s.

Down Scaling the Old Ranger cluster for micro maxx motors is fun. At BT-20 (.736") body diameter we can easily get a 4 motor cluster in the business end.

It's actually pretty amazing the amount of smoke and fire ya get from these little guys!

This model is also set up with LED's in the payload section for Night flying with a 3V lithium battery.

Well, it came out of the package as a Big Bertha Kit but I have 4 BB's built already so I deleted a fin and swapped nose cones with another Estes cone. I also sanded off the sharp parts of the fins. I guess it is a hybrid, a Partial Bertha you might say

I also installed an ejection baffle and nylon chute. I plan on making this my go-to rocket for lots of launches.

I built this rocket for a junior high school science project, and launched a white rat in it. I have photos of the launch dated spring 1968. In those days the largest engines we had were B, both end burning and the high thrust core burners. I built a special launch pad for it and used a longer 1/4" diameter rod. I also set it up for dual parachute- one for the booster and one for the payload section, with a harness attached to the fins so the booster would land on its side rather than fin-down. I don't remember how many flights it has had, probably not very many. It was flown twice with the white rat and had good flights both times, with no apparent affects on the payload.

The launch photo is from 1968.

Found my all-black Big Bertha after about 10 years of sitting in a moving box. One of the fins was missing and the upper 3/16 of the body tube was badly crunched.

So, I trimmed up the tube, replaced the fins, sand her down and repainted her in a new color scheme. Then I cam up with a lame slogan "Big Bertha Evolved" and cut out some decals on the vinyl cutter.

For this one I was trying out new paints and a new technique and I have to say I'm VERY happy with the way she came out:

Wow, I like a lot of these. Somehow I've never built a BB...gonna have to make one pretty soon. As far as a paint theme I'm thinking "COW" (the Pig Bertha is hysterical, we need more farm animals!).

Pretty cool to see Vern flying BB#1 recently. I recall seeing him fly it at NARAM 32 or 34, and it was old then. It's gotta be the oldest model rocket still in semi-regular operation, flown by the longest-serving rocketeer ever.

This is a BT-80 based Ranger upgrade. The body and mount were built by the late Alex McLoughlin of Oregon Rocketry. I bought this from him at a "flea market." I added the payload section and fins.

Alex got to see the finished model before he died. He got a kick out of how an abandoned project of his evolved.

I've flown the model two or three times, on a cluster of 3 x C11-7 motors. I believe a D12-7 cluster would do fine as well.

Thought I'd post this Youtube video of my unglamorous (I put on a white base coat, but never got around to putting on the rest of the paint) Ranger clone. It is made from a current Big Bertha, but instead of using a Balsa nose block for the payload section, I glued 1/2" foam core disks in the front and back of a CT-60 coupler tube. But the business end (cluster mount) was built using the Ranger's tissue and white glue filler.

The Ranger's flight is the second one in the video (the first is a saucer launched by the daughter of our club president who also shot the video). If I remember correctly, the Ranger was flown on three Quest A6-4 motors, hence the nice smoky launch. If you listen carefully, you can also hear the "pop-pop-pop" of the three ejection charges going off one right after the others.

This is one I built my wife. We launched it and apparently there was a very slight breeze above us. It got about 100 feet, up, tipped into the wind and took off like a cruise missle, lol. The chute deployed and it floated back to within about 100 yards of where we launched.

A couple weeks later I was playing with some 13mm body tube and a 1/4" cardboard launch lug and came up with the downscales. The next time we were out to launch, I pulled the 13mm out and asked if she had washed and dried her rocket. She laughed, then I pulled out the MMX version and she rolled her eyes and called me a dork.

Sorry, I couldn't help but edit the photo. The background was so bland! Here's my average Baby Bertha... It has been flown once on an A8-3.

I ended up with a Super Big Bertha nose cone in a box of junk. So I built one.

I think this thread needs to be broken up into threads specific to the Ranger, Big Bertha, Baby Bertha, Mini-Bertha, Super Big Bertha, etc.

The galleries are undergoing some modifications. According to the initial concept, rockets are grouped together in families. That is a pretty broad definition, I'll grant, and subject to some degree of subjective interpretation.

The Ranger family was just completed 2 days ago and is in a holding pattern until all the proper files get uploaded (I'm not competent to do that myself...yet). I ask you to reserve judgement until it all gets posted.

Chrome tape on MMT and bottom CR and engine hook
1/8 Chrome pin-stripe tape around top of BT and inbetween fins on botoom.
Hung MMt out back 1/2 or so.

Here's my entry in the Big Bertha collection. It's an Estes kit that I modified with a 24mm E-sized motor mount, figuring that this would make my BB much more versatile - C11s, D12s, E9s, or now E12s. Also, a 3/16" launch lug was substituted for the one supplied in the kit. I added a Fliskits baffle, kevlar shock cord, and decals from Excelsior.

The paints are Rustoleum red and white, with a Future clear coat. I took some liberties with the 1969 catalog look, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. BB remains unflown currently.

I had a spare BT60 tube, so I thought I'd scratch build a Big Bertha. But, me being me, I couldn't leave it there. One Gemini nose cone from BMS later and BAM! I shall call it......Gemini Bertha

Here she is awaiting paint, motor mount, and parachute.

BT50 down scale I call Li'l Bertha. I almost had Mark custom draw stickers to look like the original with puffy lettering, but ran out of time to work it out since this was a demonstrator for a class.

Twelve years ago my Little Brother and i (I was a Big Brother) entered our club's (HUVARS) Big Bertha contest.

My Little Brother did the Mercury Bertha and I did the Gemini Bertha.

The Gemini nose cone is just a Big Bertha cone with a wood dowel, slightly tapered, glued on the top.

That's a nice shot and I appreciate the contribution.

Would you mind identifying them so we can sure of which variant we are looking at?

Sure thing, I edited the post to identify each one. I'm planning BT-55 and BT-70 variants, for the sake of completeness.

This is the 1st time I am posting a pic of one of my builds on TRF. I got the B-17 idea from Spacepirate R. I like to honor the WWII Vets. The KITS WORLD decals are of outstanding quality. This is my 6th build as a BAR and on this build I experimented w/primer only for filling fins. Fins came out OK, but I will stick to papering fins in the future.
I have been using Minwax Polycrylic Gloss as a clear coat. It always comes out "bumpy" and dosn't level out. I used Duplicolor Paint on this build, any suggestions for a clear coat? I am a little leary of using future right now:y:.

Caught a nice photo.
