View Full Version : let's make it into space - low power

Gillard
22nd January 2009, 10:05 AM
On the old TRF, there as a thread were people kept adding their total low power rocket altitude together, in the hope of reaching space.
Should we restart that again?

(i have not flown anything this year - yet)

well this is what i have flown since jan 1 2009 with the altitude figuared with a single station tracking so the altitudes are not perfect.

Corn roc 650' c6-7
Corn roc 650' c6-3
A-corn 75' a3-4t
Alpha 1100' c6-7
Mars lander 100' c6-3
Starhawk 1300+ c6-7 ( will never fly this one on anythign higher the b6-2 again)
astra 1000'+ c6-3

and thats the end of my moters untill i get some more

Charlaine,

Lets see some photos of your Mars lander!

Only 100ft on a C6? I always figured mine made it up to at least 175-200ft. But I use the wag method of altitude measurement.

Sunward umbrella - 25ft, that's about the miniumum hieght that i was getting, although occasionally it got higher 100ft . i modified mine so that it did not deploy a parachute, and came down point first - had to use D12-0 or D12-P

It might have gotten a little higher then 25 ft. but I wouldn't swear to it. Even with the D12-3, it was sitting nose up on the ground for almost a second before the ejection charge went off.

I think the next fight will be a F12-3J. With the F load and 12 thrust, it should get 4 times as high as the D12. Maybe this time the chute will actually open before the rocket is on the ground.

My kids flew their rockets yesterday (cold!) for the following totals:

4 Rhino's each at about 250' for 1000'
3 D-Nelson Tomahawk's each at about 300 for a total of 900'
1 Thumper with a D12 to about 800'
1 Tiddlywink to about 80'

for a class total of 2780 feet

Today, with CATO, I flew the Tiddlywink twice for a total of 160'
and the Nantucket Sound with an E motor for an easy 900' for a total of 1060'

That gives me a total of 4000 feet over 2 days :)

What is the altitude we need to reach?

Gillard
22nd March 2009, 10:31 AM
different people give different limits.......... so.......

The atmosphere has no abrupt cut-off. It slowly becomes thinner and fades away into space. There is no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. Three-quarters of the atmosphere's mass is within 11 km of the planetary surface. In the United States, persons who travel above an altitude of 50.0 miles (80.5 km) are designated as astronauts. An altitude of 120 km (75 mi or 400,000 ft) marks the boundary where atmospheric effects become noticeable during re-entry. The Karman line, at 100 km (62 mi), is also frequently used as the boundary between atmosphere and space.

I'll go for 62 miles - 333,000 feet

so i hope some more people join in logging their altitude! - we are not close.

My son, John, and I did a little bit of flying with DARS this weekend and despite the rather windy conditions a lot of people where in attendance.

John's Patriot flight #42 on a B6-4: ~250 ft.
John's Baby Bertha flight #12 on a B6-4: ~350 ft.

I also launched a mid-power on an F52-8T which I was glad to recover within the flying field.

The rest of the afternoon was spent on rocket hound duty with a number of DARS members who successfully recovered a nice TARC rocket that had landed in a large corn field.

I'm working on making a BT-60 altimeter bay so I can get a better idea of the altitude of some of my D powered rockets. I'll be doing BT-50 and BT-55 bays too.

Zeus is a scratchbuilt rocket I made a few years back. I made a new BT-50 altimeter bay and launched it three times this morning. I overwrote the C6-5 data as I had a false start on the altimeter setting up the first D12-7 flight. The altimeter holds data for three flights and it wasn't until I got home that I releasized the false start meant I could only fly one D12 flight without erasing the C6 data - dang!

On the first Anubis launch I had to use the nose cone from the Launch Pad's Bolo. That nose cone is weighted and the additional weight caused the flight to be less than spectacular.

If anyone is considering getting The Amazing Point from Semroc I highly recommend they get the version that has the grass-seeking nose. I have the version withteh pavement-seeking nose and the rocket has to go into the paint shop after every flight!
