View Full Version : Shock Cord Attachment Point Protection

I just received the new Madcow Rocketry, Fiberglass 2.6" Patriot.
The shock cord is flat nylon.
Since I will only get 1 chance to mount the shock cord and eye bolt, I'll cover a portion of the cord with a Kevlar sleeve.
My question; what method is used to protect the nylon where it wraps through the eye bolt?
I have not done this before.
My first thought is to get a Kevlar sleeve that will slide over the eye bolt and secure it so it doesn't slide off.
Is there another way short of adding a section of Kevlar shock cord?
(I did search the forums before posting, nothing stood out as a solution)
Many thanks

My question is why use nylon in the first place. Nylon has very little heat resistance becoming brittle as this heat is applied.
My first thought would be to use a Stainless Fishing leader attached to the eyebolt then your kevlar or nylon if you must shockcord could be attached to the leader or cable eye at least 12" away for the heat and flames.

Thanks for the suggestion.
To answer; it was supplied with it, a nice length of flat braid nylon shock cord.
Since it was delivered this way I would like to use it.
All of the Madcow kits that I've built to date have come with both Kevlar and Nylon so this is new.
I'm just trying to visualize how to protect the MMT end of the single piece shock cord as it passes through the eye bolt.
Thanks much for responding and your suggestion.
I'll keep it in mind.

I used a generous length of
1/8" tubular Kevlar in my Madcow HoJo...
Why protect nylon with kevlar if you can
use all kevlar and toss the nylon...

Definite point here! Since you won't be able to reach into the rocket to change and inspect the nylon, using enough Kevlar to extend out of the rocket is a very good idea. I have several rockets where I've installed a Kevlar loop on the MMT and the top of the loop is just slightly above the top of the BT. Easy replacement/inspection of the shock cord and don't have to worry about the Kevlar.
I do have one HPR with steel cable coming off the MMT. Again, it extends to the top of the BT. That has also worked well, but it is heavier then the fishing leader that micromeister suggested. I'm not sure the service live is any longer then what Kevlar would be.
You could install a Kevlar loop on the MMT/upper CR and eliminate the weight of the eyebolt.
