Been wanting to place an order with Apogee for sometime. I like what I see on thier site and also the good news Ive read about them. I just could not decide what to order. I wanted something dif from Estes and Quest. Not that I have any issues with either . Thats the only ones Ive ever built.(also Centuri in the day) I was looking for a kit around the $50 range ,so I decide to go with the Dynastar "Snarky". I think this rocket looks awesome. I have built many model airplanes in my younger days and this would give me a little from both worlds. I did a "search" here and see some have built this and all seemed very happy with the quality of this kit and instructions. Scotty Dog

Holly Molly, There is so must to choice from these days. When I was young I had a paper catalog from Centuri ,and the rockets that were in that , were my choices. I see Hobbylinc has some good deals on motors A-C. Thats one thing I need to look into. Were I live there is not to many places to buy motors and I pay top $ for them. Thanks for the heads up  Scotty Dog

Scotty Dog....I will tell you two things.

Apogee is TOP DOG ...none better (well there are some really good vendors on this site ,and those guys always show up...and being from Canada...they do the hobby a great justice...look for them or ask)

The Snarky is a pretty cool looking kit and set the standards of NO 3F and a tube, that Shrox dude is the "Timothy Leary" of rocket design.

The kit does need some carefull thought and patience in building ,a sharp blade in the handle and plenty open thought.I built the kit some time ago and flew it into the ground (the nosecone may sprout anytime now ,as soon as the ground thaws)
I have another in the stash, and cherish it like my first love (Mmmmm...well maybe not that much) but pretty darn close.

BUY IT !!

Don't for get the LexxJet and the Firefox. Nobody but Tim and I thought the LexxJet would fly. Tim Van Milligan that is...

I have a Snarky and a Firefox in my fleet. Both have been flown in demos and are fine performers. A few years ago, the MI ANG videotaped my Snarky being launched in Alpena, MI. The Snarky and Stiletto are featured in one of my YouTube videos. hope to obtain a Lexxjet--may dress it up as a USAF C-21. If the X-3 style rocket were released, then that one as well.

I think a comparison between Shrox and Howard Hughes might be a closer analogy--except for the latter years.

I did it. Ordered the Snarky and a bunch of other stuff from Apogee. sounds crazy ,but this is the first time "I" have ordered anything off the net. I also ordered the Quest Tomahawk Cruise Missle. Building supplies; Mid-Power= "Tubes-o-plenty,Rings-o-plenty,Engine hook assortment,1-24" plastic chute,2-10" plastic chutes, 1-Dynanstar 24 "Nylon chute. I still need shock cords, balsa wood ,NCs, ect. I donnt know what I want for the latter listed and not sure what I should use on the projects I have in mind. Plus, Im gona "spread the love" and place that order with a local from TRF. So, to help me with the design "Q"s I did myself a HUGE favor and also ordered "Model Rocket Design and Construction Book by "Mr Milligan" I ordered the 24" Nylon chute to use (maybe) in the "Snarky" inplace of the plastic 32" that comes with the kit. I checked out reviews of the "Snarky" and most said to change the chute, reason being-They had issues with the 32 opening and the times it did the rocket zippered. Ill let ya know when it all comes. Im gona do a Snarky build thread . Just donnt hold your breath tho, I need to finish the Saturn V and do some reading first. Scotty Dog

Does this mean we get an RC conversion too? :)

Seriously, your gonna have fun with this kit. I had a Dynastar Rising Star and it was the best rocket I had for a long time. As long as you keep the wings straight and don't launch it in too much wind, you'll have a blast with it.

P.S. If you put a zipper protector on the shock cord and put a longer delay motor in it, you'll get a cool looking "fighter dive" out of it.

If you like to build, I think you'll have fun with the Snarky - I sure did. The best part is putting on those shark's teeth decals - that's when it really "pops"; save them for the very end for maximum effect.
Ditto on the anti-zipper protection. Doesn't take much, just some tape or foam on the shock cord. IIRC, mine zippered on its maiden flight as it got yanked out of the initial stage of an unintentional "fighter dive".
If you have fun with the Snarky, follow it up with the Firefox-SHX. Twice the tube cutting fun!

choose the "Snarky". And the challenge. Im a "Steamfitter" and Im used to laying out patterns and such on "tubes". I had it in my head that I would just make my own wrap-around to layout the belly angle-fudangle on the Snarky.Well , after doing a review on the Snarky,I see they include a wrap-around pattern in kit. Thats all good. Also ,I built airplanes when I was younger. Like I said before-a little of both worlds with the Snarky kit. Scotty Dog

My Snarky has two minor BT zippers. Both on the underside. So not noticeable--and repaired.

Upon further review, Shrox may well be the Burt Rutan of model rocketry.

Where did you get the smaller decals made up? That thing looks great! I still got a few projects I need to finish before I start my Snarky. I did look thru the instructions and have a couple questions about the build. One was, they didnnt say to sand the root of the wing to the angle of the BT where they meet. I just dry fit the wing into the guide and saw that is was not a good fit. I wonder if this is a good thing, maybe it makes for a better fillet on top of wing? The other "Q" is, How far down from tip of NC does the red paint go? Maybe its up to the builder. It seemed to show all the edges of the fins, wings, rudder as square? I guess thats up to the builder also? Anywhoo-I would say "Good luck with your build" but it seems by your pics of Snarky 111you donnt need any luck. Scotty Dog

Scotty Dog,

I like Snarkett better, can I have that for the name of my down-size Snarky?

Anyway, the decals are a combination of downsizing the original decals onto regular printing paper and 'borrowing' from plastic model kits.

The wing is just glued to the BT without any 'sanding' any angle on it. The glue, 'ELMOS' glue all, fills in the gaps. (Thats Elmers glue all)

As far as the paint job, I painted the whole NC instead of half of the NC like the three view shows. I relocated the "eyes" onto the body instead of the NC(bet you didn't notice) per the 3 view. All the decals are printed on paper except the stars and bars on the wing. I have a few triangles and some grey rectangles to place otherwise I'm done.

I plan on flying(launching) this W/E if there is a launch scheduled.
Let us know when you start your build.

BTW... all the dark red is paint, ie...leading edge of the wings and tail parts. Don't stress!

Once you build & launch your Snarky, when using larger motors, I'd recommend an 18" chute. It is a surprisingly light bird, and will get quite high on E motors. I've attached a pic in case you need more motivation to get started on this cool build.

I've attached a pic in case you need more motivation to get started on this cool build. I did a review of the snarky and most issues were with the 32" plastic Dynastar chute . Either it did not open or when it did -ZIPPER-The folks on the review said to go to a 24" nylon chute. I am ichting to start this kit, however I do need to finish up some others. I got 2 odroks going and still need to paint Saturn V. One of the odroks is going to be something else for sure. I been documenting the build and will post it after the first launch. Ok... My last order I got the 32 inch plastic chute-- no lines or rings, but that's not a problem-- I've got plenty of carpet thread, and I prefer cutting small squares of duct tape to tape dots-- duct tape is SO strong that it'll rip the whole corner off the chute before it lets go... :)

My Snarkett flies but it needs nose weight.
About the same as what you would put in the Bullpup 12D. Two pats of clay.
I started with a B6-4, no nose weight, corkscrewd one full turn, leveled out, chute deployed. Nice flight.
When I switched to a C6-3, no nose weight, Watchout! Squirrely. All red N/C.
Needed noseweight.
I borrowed my NC from my Bullpup 12D and Snarkett flew fine, straight and true! It has an all white N/C.

Oh, how I love this hobby!

MaxQ,

What are the specs on the big Snarky?

Got more pics?
A build page?

Made from junked parts I got at a swap meet....4 " diameter BT and a unknown NC.

No build thread here, although I took a few pictures while building it.

I have an motor ejection sytem that has the potential to blow a droque out of the nose and then later, a seperate main parachute in an internal tube to operate off of an altimeter ejection charge at a preselected altitude....a kind of "single point of recovery" form of "dual deployment".
No idea if it would work. The possibility of a tangled droque and main from a single point is a problem if the hanesses are not set up correctly.

I did my best at doing a Rocksim of this ungainly thing....and I was going to launch it last fall, but I wanted to hear from the "Rocket Reverand" Brad Wilson before I launched it - since he had an upscale Snarky of the same size arc over and go in at LDRS.....
